LIRA meetings

so i was thinking of joining the LIRA, i was just wondering exactly what takes place. how long do the meetings usually last, and are there usually frag swaps or something at the meetings? what else do you guys usually do?

Welcome aboard--

Meetings vary somewhat. Generally the idea is everyone gets together, hangs out for a bit socializing and talking to other reef people, catching up, and then we have a speaker or workshop. these are generally pretty interesting and a good way to learn. This month we're having Anthony Calfo come to do a workshop on how to build your own aquariums. Also we're electing officers.

After that, yes there's usually an auction, where memebers bring frags (and Joe supplies some from Atlantis ) that you can bid on and bring home for very reasonable prices. Some members bring their wares (Bill usually has cleanup guys and macroalgae, Tony has dry goods, etc) and you can work out deals with people for trades or sales to take place.

so if i do join and attend the next meeting am i supposed to bring a frag or two to put up on the auction? how will i know if there is definetely an auction or not?

Nope--if you have something you can frag and would like to donate, that is great. If not (and this is the case with many of us getting tanks started) just bring yourself.

ok, last questions.

i have plenty of frags to bring, so i can just bring them, there isnt going to be any problems on where to put them/hold them, there will be holding tanks set up already?

and, can i just pay my membership fee there, or do i have to mail it in?

well witht he auction, everybody that brings frags, brings them in bags that will last the night and car ride home. there arent holding tanks set-up. you just bring the frags your going to auction to the front in its bag and the person that bids the most takes that bag.

ok, so ill just bag them up and then ill put them in a styrafoam cooler i have with a heat pack. how long do the meetings usually last?

Just to make the "auction" clear. What is "auctioned" is donated with all proceeds going to the club. Donations are always welcome but not mandatory.
If you would like to sell your Items at the meeting there is a selling fee that the club charges. I thinks its 10.00 or is it 100.00? JK

But believe me either way everyone wins.

Are meetings always fridays or saturdays? Unfortunately, they are the 2 days of the week that I work night shifts. 8(

Yes they are either Friday Evenings or Saturday Late afternoons/evenings. Sorry

You just got to think ahead and request those days off It's the only way I made meetings when I was working retail.

yea, i understand im not making any money, its just a donation, but im trying to make room in my 30 gal for sps anyway, so its better than shipping them half way across the u.s. to someone else who want em.

also, does anybody usually bring sps frags, or is it usually just softies and lps?
