List your "proven" solutions to your STN problem.

I think the poster confused alk Swing, and corals swinging in and out of water.

Dave , I used alk swing as an EXAMPLE. I never said anything that goes wrong in life is due to alk swing lol

Alk, Alk, Alk.....

I tend to get STN, stunted growth rates, ect when the alk is what I call "bouncy" not nessasarilly large swings but not completely stable as well.

There are many reasons why someone's kitchen can stink. There is no scientific data that suggest you left food in your trash for too long but I know that when I do, my kitchen stinks... So I make sure not to leave the trash in there too long... Does that mean that only garbage left too long can make it stink? Is there a unbiased scientific study that can prove conclusively that my garbage is making my kitchen stink? No.... But you know my mom told me it made her kitchen stink. I tell my kids it will make there kitchen stink. Does that mean if they keep their trash clean it will never stink? No. But should I then stop telling people to empty their trash? No....

Alk extremes cause STN. If my alk is at an extreme, that is also the same thing as a water issue, so.... Keep your alk In check and alk swings will not be the cause of STN.... Something else might. I lost a frag last night to STN and all parameters are perfect... New frag, probably stress. But you know what? The first thing I do is check my alk....When my kitches stinks, the first thing I do is check my trash...

I think we can debate the list of causes until the cows come home. I am looking for anecdotal evidence only. Jusy let me know if u have "beat" it, for how long, and how...

if your foot hurts, is there a sure way to remedy it ?

rubbing it might help, but what if its on fire ? then rubbing it wont do nothing !

same here, have to find the cause.

my solution to stn is more zoas.

haha I am starting to head that route. I am curious to common issues people have had with STN since I am going through a situation currently. Right now I know my Alk is good and think that my issue was due to low nutrients. So I have increased my water changes and started feeding a little more which seems to have stopped the STN so far. Hopefully this will resolve my issue.

I have lost 2 smaller frags to STN this week. So speaking of ALK swings, how much is considered a swing?

I have dosing pumps turning on once an hour for 9 hours in a day. One for ALK and one for CAL. The ALK runs from 9pm to 6am to help with my ph levels at night, so by 7pm my levels have dropped a bit. Is this kind of consumption rate or dosing schedule enough to consider a daily swing?

+1 for sure.

STN can be caused by many issues...my "proven" solution was putting my LEDs in the garbage and returning to MH/t5s; problem solved!!!!

I wonder if throwing my LED's away from my DT will fix my STN issues I had on my Frag tank with MH/T5 Combo? Probably not...

Perhaps you need to toss those MH/T5s and get a different MH/T5 setup?? ;)

OP,

Are you asking for a "solution" to a specific coral which has begun an STN episode? As in, has anyone ever reversed STN on a specific coral? Besides the action of fragging said coral, it's been quite rare for me to turn one around. Even when fragging there's a good chance of losing coral.

Are you asking about stopping a continuous STN chain reaction situation across numerous corals yet unaffected? I realize you may just be asking in generalities.

I really don't have anything new to add regarding a "proven" method to reversing/stopping STN. I've tried everything listed in this thread. Sometimes, albeit rarely, a coral can turn around and regrow over its dead self. (That certainly is a fantastic trick, right!?!). Each tank contains its own ecosystem. Each coral lives and "breathes" from the water surrounding it. Lighting, extreme temperature fluctuations, stray voltage and what not aside...Chances are good that something isn't ideal with the water, right? In generalities again, I would say a water change with correct params is a great start.

STN = check for unwanted critters.

If it keeps going frag it.

Keeping the water stable is offcourse an issue but when you have STN/RTN you past that point already.

1: alk swings (test daily)
2: pest ( qt and dip)
3: salinity ( test with different kits/ hydrometer )
4: mag depleted ( most time mag depletion will throw parameters off, check first)

after you find the cause and fix the issue I have found a few steps to be extra beneficial

1. Dip the coral in iodine
2. Frag above the stn or put lots of super glue over the stn area and slightly over good tissue

I have had a 100% recovery when I used those two methods after fixing the reason for the stn. Other corals I did nothing for continued to stn.

I personally dont have LEDs, but Im gonna buy some and trow away just in case that would help my acros grow lol

Looking for anecdotal solutions to wide spread STN that have worked for people. For example, I was using kalk and after switching to dosing pumps for alk my problem got fixed OR I found a battery laying in my sand bed.

Never had STN while using nsw.. but with mixed salt tank it was twice down to faulty return pumps and a few times despite test kits.. not dosing potassium.
recently had an issue for ages, replaced pump.. bit better, switched to LED's and of course blamed them.. turn down the intensity, bla bla bla..
one day sat out in the English summer (actually sunny day) and thought, blimey this is hot..
then sat under the LED's and thought.. blimey this is mild..
upped everything to 100% and slowly increasing from 8 hours full on to maybe ending up in 10 hours.. what do you know.. (ok.. again started potassium dosing despite salifert saying I'm at 500ppm) voila.. STN stopped
and grown seen for the first time in 15 months
hmm.. rant over
