:worried: :worried: okay, so i have just got my 55 gal set up going, i added water, LR, LS, lighting, filtration etc... after about a week of cycling i decided to add some damsels to help it a long a little so i bought 3. after day one all was good. levels fine everything great. couldnt be happier.. day two i noticed the smaller of the 3 looking a little roughed up didnt think much of it since damsels are known to be aggressive, figured no worries right? well day 3 he's MIA cant find him any where i only have about 2 rocks in there one of which is like a 20 lb huge awesome center piece of Fiji LR. so i moved the rock to see if he had died and made his way under there. nope. puzzled i went to work and came back and realized another of the damsels was looking beat up too... so now i am completely confused checked the ph and nitrates all good. the fish just looked sick and ended up dying so i flushed him well i was looking in the tank at my one lonely fish and saw what was left of my 1st missing damsel stripped to the bones and nothing left but bits and pieces of a almost completely eaten fish the thing is he was half stuffed into a hole on that huge piece of LR in my tank. i guess what i am getting at is: could there be something still living in that rock that is going to keep eating my fish? i have heard of all kinds of things living in rock and transferring to your tank but, a killer creature who eats my fish LOL i mean is that possible and if so what the heck could it be?

octopus! its unlikely but possible. you never know what you will find in live rock. the only concern i have is after 1 week your levels were good? did you use biospira or some cycle quickening agent?

well it was probably more like a week and a half.. i guess 3 days before i put in the LR and then i put the fish in a week after that so week and a half? and yeah my levels are good.. unless i am reading my sticks wrong they are all ok. ill take another reading tomorrow and post them but WOW you really think it could be that? that would be awesome! mits a pretty small hole though.. actually ill go take a pic... here ya go.. i think too small for an octopus but may be i am wrong...its that little hole there on the bottom... no f ing clue... maybe i should set a trap and try to catch what ever it is...

I would think more laong the lines of a mantis shrimp. if you have any fish left camp out one night and see what is hunting them down

i have a black damsel left and he is quick real quick so i think that is why he's still alive.. i moved the rock last night before i went to bed and put some sand in front of that hole, sure enough this morning the sand was moved so SOMETHING is in there.. just no idea as to what yet i did notice what looked like a small clam in one of the holes on the back side of the rock when i put it in my tank but it was open so i figured it to be dead. but who knows..

try placing a pice of fish or shrimp in front of the hole, or where you think it is coming from and wait to see if anything comes out.

I KNOW that i have a mantis in my tank (can hear his damn clicking at all hours) and the same thing happened to my 2 damsels. Day 1 they looked scuffed up.... day 2 the scuffs got worse and fins were ragged.... day 3 dead! 2 separate occasions and the same outcome.

I have 2 traps in the tank for him right now but have yet to catch him. My advice is that if you know what piece of rock hes hiding in.... dip it in a 5g buck of fresh water or hypo water and WATCH HIM RUN OUT!!

Some people love them and keep them as pets. I have seen nice ones (rwhunt) on this site. However he will keep killing your fish until you get him out....trust me. He has also taken to killing my redlegged hermits. I wake up to find piles of red legs on various parts of my reef.

Good luck.
