Little Iwaki help from the locals?

Spoke to my electrician and he says there is a voltage regulator you could get but he wasn't sure where. My guess would be grainger, I suppose they would be expensive. It all depend on how much of a deal you got on the pump. If you search there they have 208 volt converters but you could buy alot of new pumps for the cost of those.

I spoke to a buddy's motor mechanic and he told me that it will work fine and will run a little faster than normal on 220. It may reduce the service life, but most 1/3 horse motors have 30% extra tolerance built in.

So if the guy hoses me on the return, I'll run it 'till it flames.

Thanks,

I suppose it would be similar to overdriving bulbs. Well if it bursts into flames you need to post pics.

Randal, if you run the 220V motor on the US electricity, it will not burn, since the US electric outlet is rated at 110V (which is less than your motor's rated voltage), this means that you will not get all the power out of your motor. The best way is to buy an electric transformer, that transforms the 110VAC to 220VAC (50Hz to 60Hz). You can find that at any store that sells suitcases or travel equipment.

I have run into this servicing equipment in the past. The issue is that the foreign motor is rated for 50 Hz and we have 60 Hz in the USA. The voltage is not really the issue, it's the fact that the motor RPM will be approximately 20% faster. The bearings within the motor will most likely show premature wear/failure with long term use. The Motor is actually rated at 200 VAC/50Hz for Japanese service. Iwaki said it will run on 60HZ with no problems. I am intending to run it on 220VAC/60Hz if I can't get my $$ back...

Should be fine the hz is the thing that you need to watch. but if Iwaki said it will work then go for it. The voltage is not really a problem. Most electrical components are required by the certification company (UL, CE) to operate properly on +/- 10% of the rated input voltage anyways. And I have never seen any line come in at exactly what its supposed to.
