Little Piece of Reef Version II

Bernie are you using just GFO and GAC as far as the filtration is concerned? Do you have a refugium or use Siporax etc? What return pump are you using?

I don't have a refugium.
I do have a liter of Siporax and 1 liter of Matrix in two separate bags sitting passively in the sump.
I have a Eheim 1260 Universal pump for the return.
To catch large particles there is a filter sock.
The skimmer is AquaMaxx ConeS CO-1.
For water movement, there are two Ecotech MP40Ws.
And recently I re-introduced GFO and GAC in the BRS reactors.
Then daily I use AF Pro Bio S and AF -NP Pro to keep the nutrient down.
As of about 3 weeks ago, I also have started using Vibrant liguid aquarium cleaner.

N 0.5 (Salifert)
P is undetectable (Elos Professional PO4 kit)

However, the algae in the tank might have fooled the test results. And the colors of the corals are not saturate enough to my liking.
I need to clean the front acrylic wall about every 3 days.

By the way, since revamp, I have been using Tropic Marin regular salt but for the past two water changes, I have switched to AF reef salt because it is similar and less expensive. They seem to be excellent salts.

This Nasuta survives the reboot.

Very nice Bernie, That is good growth on your OT for the time you have had it. I am stepping up to a bigger tank next year I will have to hit you up for some frags.

Hi Glen, this is the Red Dragon which was only 1.5" about a year ago from you. It grows reasonably fast.

It is all very impressive.

I have been debating on the ATI Hybrid or a Sunpower for the next tank. As a Hybrid owner would you still chose that or just go with a Sunpower?

I love the Hybrid which is a very nice unit. However, I did experienced the reliability problem (maybe I am the unlucky one). It took me close to 3 hours to replace a ballast without mentioning that I have to pay for it. If they have improved its reliability, I definitely will buy it again despite the fact that it is expensive.

If you choose to take Sunpower which I know is pretty powerful and reliable, I would suggest that you might attach a Reef Brite Led with it.

Last year when I visited you, your tank was fully packed with beautiful corals. Besides, it is one of the cleanest tanks I have ever seen! I am not surprise that you are looking into a bigger one. How large is it going to be?

Closeups of two common but beautiful corals:

Strawberry Shortcake. Last year October it was about 1" when I got it from UC. It encrusts a lot which I like because this way there would be less room for algae to grow. Color-wise, I wish it was a little bit richer.

This Red Planet is another survivor from last tank. It does not show the greenish color on the body. However, I fragged a small piece from it to make room for the Cold Blue Tenius, and place it at the bottom of the tank. This tiny frag after a few weeks at the bottom does have some greenish color on its body.

Two close ups

Cold Blue Tenius -- it was brown when I first got it. It is now one of my favorites.

Rommel's Watermelon

Oh baby.. I had to bring these two shots onto this page to add to the cornucopia of fabulous photos and colours.
Just beautiful. Well done!!
Looking forward to more eye candy.

Matt, thanks for the kind words.

These two corals have nice colors. The Cold Blue Tenius was from BC and I did not complain about its being brown when I first got it, because it was a freebie. However, it turns out to be very nice. Not too often that something is free and turns into a beauty. Adam from BC told me that it was brown because it was shaded heavily in his frag tank.

Rommel's Watermelon was from BC too. I wish it had a bit more green color. It encrusts quit a lot and actually touches the base of Red Planet. So far nobody wins yet.

Oh, I re-read my fish list. I have left one out.

It is a cleaner wrasse and my grand kids call it Lightning. They love to watch it getting so close to other fish to pick on something on their skin. Very fun to watch. And it swims lightning fast, hence it gets this name. I got 2 but only one survives.

Hi Mark, thanks for the kind words and thanks for stopping by.

I have been following yours for a while and I think yours is a lot more fantastic than mine.

This is an unknown maricultured acro acquired in a local store. It was white with a tiny tint of red about 2" size. Anyway, I thought it was pretty and the price was good. So I got it. However, within a few weeks in my tank, to my surprise it started to turn red. Now it stays red wherever I place it. This is also the only SPS that reacted to my Hydrogen Peroxide treatment for the Bryopsis. It shriveled up a little and then recovered.

This is from ASD called Red Hurricane. It spends most time encrusting instead of sending up much shoots. it also gets shaded somewhat from its neighboring corals.

Oh man you have quite a nice set up. I've been curious to see what results people are having with AF long term. Glad to see it's doing well for you.
