Live Cowries

You can get c. tigris and sometimes c. arabica at pet stores from time to time, but that's about it. Both of these aren't really suitable, they get big and bulldoze things all over the tank, and would probably starve to death in short order.
I have asked several serious shell collecters, and they pretty much agree that if you want live ones you'll have to collect them yourself.
If you find another source for live cowries please tell me i'm also interested.

I find them on occassion in the DFW area of Texas. I currently have two small tiger cowries in a 29 gal FOWLR. They cleaned up some hair algae and kept it gone for a while. Unfortunately they started slacking and I had to get some turbos to help them out. Where are you located? If you're in the North Texas area, I could keep an eye out for some for you.

I have 3 Ring Cowries and 2 Money Cowries. All of them I have gotten from my LFS.
Whenever they get a shipment of LR, they actually spend an entire day going over the rock and removing any they find. Then if they find a few they call me and I come get them. If you have a LFS that your in good with, ask them if you could look over their LR when it comes in. They are very easy to spot as they always have thier mantels retracted and since they have white shells they stand out real well against the green, brown and purple of the LR.
I would only recommend those two species as they stay small and are they only ones know to be officially grazers of algae and not corals. Mine have been model citizens. Good Luck

Here is a link that sells them. I recommend you get about 3 to start, too many and they may starve.
One word about them. They hide during the day and come out after lights out. So look for them at night about 2 hours after the lights are out....mine are always on the back glass.
