Live Rock Dr. Macs, or Thatpetplace?

I need 150 - 200lbs was going to make the trip to either Dr. Macs or Thatfishplace and pick some up... Has anyone bought a large amount of rock from either of these places?

If so what did you think of the quality you got?

I have never been impressed with the LR from TPP. I have seen a handful of nice show pieces, but they were extremely large and as I said...only a handful of them.

Something Fishy in Northampton, PA had some very nice LR last time I was there. Some great pieces of Marshall Island rock that was reasonably priced ($6/lb I think).

East Coast Aquatics is in the process of setting up a new Live Rock tub...several actually...and will be getting all different types of rock from what I hear.

My first step would be to call Something Fishy and speak with them about what you are looking for. I have always had very good luck with them.

Dr. Mac's rocks are really nice I think. Never saw any bad hitchikers in any of it and I got a couple of nice looking pieces. I would check both places though for prices. There was someone else posting on Dr. Mac's forum last month I think about how great his LR was. Just my input.

all the above sound pretty good. TFP has about 6 huge square tubs usually filled with rock cooking. but i havent bought any rock in many years. just the same, because all these places are a pretty good drive for you, i would call them all first to see what they have on hand and their delivery schedule , and what they could order for you. might as well do some homework before spending gas money. Dr. mac has lots passing thru , but the day we were there the curing tanks were empty. all shipped out waiting for the next batch to come in. so I would call them all first.

I've bought at least 40-50 lbs from TPP and while I am a "huge" fan of there store and staff, there LR doesn't seem to have many animals on it (if any) that grow out.

Meanwhile I spent a lot of time checking out Dr. Mac's LR and quite honestly there was a huge difference. On his LR I found lots of small live coral pieces that could potentially build and incredible growing reef. If it were my money, I'd choose Dr. Mac's LR and then maybe some filler or base rock from TPP. At Dr. Macs, your paying for quality and you get exactly what you pay for there IMO.

If you look in my gallary the "mystery white stuff" with a little green on it and bright white dots on it is some sort of encrusting coral on the LR. That rock I got at Dr. Mac's. The only hitchhiker I have ever found in TPP's rock was feather dusters. Dr. Mac's also had feather dusters and a lot more coraline algae.

So my experience would be the same as wds21921. More life with Dr. Mac's and all of it good stuff.

Thanks for the input guys, Gordonious did the "mystery white stuff" grow and stay alive?

I will definently be calling before i go anywhere, i was hopping to get to Dr. Macs this week but while unpacking my AGA over flow kit i noticed they sent me all 1" bulk heads and 1 of them needs to be 3/4" so they are sending me a new one and I might not get it in time to fill the tank by the weekend.

I believe have an extra 3/4" bulk head. If your going to Dr. Mac's Sunday I'll trade you the bulk head for a ride... Do you need/want slip or double threaded?

You can always get the liverock and fill the tank up to just under the overflow, and move the water around with a powerhead. That is if you have to get it this weekend.

Thats my plan, the only problem is i wanted to leak test the whole set up... i guess i can just hold the hose for the return on the that over flow in the tank....

Hurry and fill up tank!... im 15 gallons in on a over 200 gallon system
