live rock help

So, I would Like to get some more LR for my tank. I am thinking liveaquaria.com. Which rock would be best? The tank is 29 gallons and there is 15-20 pound in there now. Should I order cured or uncured? I was thinking the fiji uncured rock, 22 pound box. would this be okay? The tank is empty right now of animals. Also, I only want to get the cheapest rock to fill the tank up more, so is this a good choice? The base rock looks like it isn't availible, so thats a no. Any smaller peices coul go into the sump, and my eclipse 6.

The uncured rock will likely extend your cycle a bit, but when you get it just have 2 5g buckets of water ready and another tub of about 15g or so. Take the rock, scrub it really well, rinse in the 1st 5g bucket scrub a bit more, rinse again, rinse really well in 2nd bucket then place in 15g tub, repeat for each rock, either let it cure for awhile in the 15g tub (with good circulation) or just put it in your tank, but i would let it cure for a few days to just get the majority of dead stuff out.

If I were to just blast it with a power head in a bucket for a few minutes, and scrub with a tooth brush, could that get most of the dead stuff out? Also, will the rock be too much for the tank? It said it comes with 6 peices, what if I ordered the 45 or a 30 pound box? The plan is to make a slope i the tank. Also, I will be using several rocks currently in the tank for my 6 gallon set-up.

I had a real good experience with Premium Aquatics. I got A mix of Fiji and Marshall. Depending on your shipping zone, you may be able to have it shipped to your house. I personally know someone else who got it from them and they had a good experience too. Neither of us had any bad hitch hikers.

I was told to get cured rock so that's what I got. It has very nice colors. The live rock reviews on their site seemed pretty legit once I saw what I got and how it was shipped. Just a suggestion....ask them to describe the condition of the rock you're interested in. They were pretty honest with me about it. Some batches are better than others.

You can also describe to them the size pieces you want. Tell them to toss in some rubble for your sump.

I think I will spend the extra $$$ and get the cultured rock. I ussume this means t is cured? It only comes in a 45 pound box, but I will just have to meake a sump I guess ;), my parents will love that! I am also thinking about ordering the nano rock for my 6 gallon, as I could then use extra peices to make a smaller area of rocks in my filter, instead of media, or my soon to be sump!

Cultured doesn't mean cured... it means that it was dead rock that they placed into their "control" tank and allowed it to be inhabited. It wasn't removed from the wilds, and thus is more ecologically friendly.

There will still be die off in shipment.

Not to get nit picky...but 'cultured' is man made rock. Curing is a process that causes life to grow on the rock. I bring this up because you can go to Dr. Fosters and order Fiji cultured rock. If you read the description, they tell you that it's man made. So if your interested in natural rock (not man made), don't ask for cultured.

Okay, I think the page says it is cured, should I get that or the uncured?

I'm still new at this myself. But being new...and with the info I had....I decided on cured. I wanted my rock to have life on it when I got it. It was suggested to me to do it this way. For a new guy, I didn't want to deal with any more than I had to. It's definitely the most expensive route to take and a bit risky, I guess, because you don't know what is going to be stuck to that rock. Some people say base rock on the bottom and cured on the top. It depends on what you want. But it is worth researching before you buy. The stuff ain't cheap.

I woudl also highly suggest checking out the reef club forums and seeing if anyone in your area is getting rid of your tank. This is a sweet way to get live rock CHEAP.

I have always had great luck with liveaquaria though, never bought rock from them, but livestock has always been great.

id just get whatever that is cheap baserock, uncured, cured no matter ... you already have LR and you to 'seed' base if needed... and cured rock has some die-off in shipment so you kinda 'cure' it again, uncured rock needs to get cured and that just take longer... it's all the same to me... it depends on how long you are willing to wait and spend to get what you want... you should try googling for a Satlwater Club in your area.. join the forum and check out there 'for sale/buy'... you should be able to find decent stuff if you have a club of some sort by you.. i know i do in Houston...
