live rock in sump

I would think it would help with the biological filtration by providing more surface area for beneficial bacteria.

I don't know for sure, but it would stand to reason. I personally have LR in my sump and refugium.

agreed, sooner or later you will need a light for a fuge but for now if there are no hitchhikers or coraline algae you really dont need light...more filtration can never hurt

The LR in the sump is great IMO, with or without light. However, if you have some room, you could add a ball of chaeto algae too and help with nutrient export. In this case, you would want to add a light, but that can be done cheaply with a single PC bulb you can get at WalMart, etc.

The LR will also be great for fostering pod growth which is beneficial, add additional bio filtration, and you can move some occassionaly into the display to add some more life up there...

Best wishes,

My sump is full of live rock, as it's great biological filtration. It also helps dissipate bubbles in the sump.

I don't have a light on it any more and it has some really interesting sponges growing on it that didn't grow when I had the pc lights on it.

The only reason to light it is either for algae growth or if you have frags in the sump.

When I did have the pc lights on, I ran them on a reverse schedule from the main tank as that helps maintain proper ph at night and it also helps with using the chiller less in hot weather.
