It more the heat and flow that matters. Also the waste in teh water as it is more of filter feeding the bacteria and micro organinisms. Unless you have coral attached to it that you are wanting to keep live. U should be fine w/o light

Thanks i have a heater and canister filter on it and when i do water changes on DT i do water change on rock with old dt water!

Charlie, that is how "cooking" live rock goes. You put in a power head and heater and cover it up for 8-10 weeks to kill off the algae. The rock lives, algae dies. Aptasia will live though.
