Live Rock ??

When I was setting up my reef tank I was told one to two pounds of LR per gallon for the tank, does this rule apply to SH tanks also?

2 lbs/gal is a bit extreme, IMHO, altho that's the rule if the LR in question is pretty dense.

to be honest, i never really know how much LR i put into a given system. i aquascape it until i'm happy with it and however much that is, is how i roll. in fact, my SH setup looks fairly sparse in terms of LR (it's mostly Tonga branch), but it's well-planted with live macro (which i feel is almost a "must"), and half of the sump contains LR as well.

The weight rule is just something people say in general, but can greatly vary. Based on the weight rule, my tank would be considered deficient. However, my rock is extremely porous, branchy, and light. My surface area is WAY above average. So you can say 10 pounds of my rock would be equivalent to 20 pounds of some other rock. It can definitely vary from rock to rock.

Think of a 10 pound rock the size of a basketball versus a 10 pound rock the size of a baseball. The surface area is extremely different.
