Live Rock

I've bought rock from Finger Lakes Live Rock in the past and planned to do it again this time but when I talked to him he seemed to only want to sell me rock that he already had instead of what I wanted. I finally just asked him to invoice me for what I wanted and haven't heard from him since. So I'm looking for other suggestions.

Anyone ever buy live rock from this guy on ebay? He's got great feedback but I'm concerned about the potentially long shipping times of 2 to 3 days.

Not sure if you 100% need liverock, but I'd highly recommend bulk reef supply. I asked for 40lbs of tonga branch and specified a few types of pieces I'd want and they sent me exactly what I would've picked out if I saw it myself. It takes a bit for the bacteria/organisms to grow into it, but well worth it in the long run.

I used gulf live rock,It was pretty nice stuff, but it is very dense and be prepaired to cure it (lots of die off) .It was shipped "dry"(wet paper towels) and the sad thing is I found many tiny dead mithrax crabs that might have made the journey with a little water. Also I think this is where I picked up a parasitic copepod (I lost my favorite maroon clown)and my mantis shrimp(need new clean up crew)but I'm not sure.Next time I will probaly go a different way.I will say the guy is pleasant to deal with and shipping was fast.I also like that the rock is aquacultured (you might need more becuse of density)but you know that no reefs were disturbed.

Your LFS's might be an option, as well as posting a "Looking For" thread from fellow members.

While I don't absolutely have to have Live rock I really like getting (most of) the extras that you get with live rock. I've considered getting some of the BRS dry rock as a base and less live rock but I'm not sure I want to go with only dry rock. Considering that much of this rock will be used for a sea horse tank I guess it would be safer to use dry rock.

I do plan to let the rock cycle for a month or two before I introduce any livestock so I might be lucky enough to find most of the "bad stuff" beforehand.

How big of a seahorse tank are you planning?I was going to do a small near the tub in the bath room I'm remodeling (thought it might be relaxing)when i brought it up to the wife she asked if i was going to build it into the wall(she doesn't take to much intrest in my fish) so now its going big or at least big for sea horses still planning though.

30G Hex for a pair of h. erectus. My wife loves my tanks, she even bought the tank were using for the horses, but has no interest in letting me put any of them anywhere but the basement. I'd love to do an in wall. I would have preferred a larger 50 - 60G hex but will start with this and upgrade later if it works out.

I don't know about in NY but down here the LFS charges $4 / lb for live rock! You can get it all day long here on RC from other club members for $2 / lb and sometimes $1 / lb if someone is in a hurry to break their tank down. So the LFS isn't an option for me. I went with the MarcoRock route for one reason...I'm not starting with someone elses problems. ;) I paid about $2 / lb to my door and I couldn't be happier with it. I got the Key Largo dry rock and love it. You can request sizes and shapes and it is packed VERY well, hardly any rubble at all.

I have a bunch of live rock I'll be selling in the next couple weeks if you want to wait around. It is all live and has been in my display tank for 2 years.

Decent live rock up here starts at about $7/lb and I've seen it as much as $12/lb for nice rock. Your prices probably largely reflect how close you are to the source of the rock. From what I've seen, individuals sell their rock starting at $3 only if they're in a big hurry, likely because they paid much more for it up front.

In any case it's not entirely about the price of the rock. I'm looking for rock with lots of life. Most of the live rock in the LFS looks like base rock. I guess they're charging for the cycling? I plan to cycle it separately and wouldn't even consider adding rock from any source to my DT without a proper cycle / quarantine period anyway.
