Live Rock

Today my live rock is finally coming!! It is truly an awesome day I cannot wait to put it in a see what it looks like. Just wondering, any special things I need to do before putting in my tank? Going to run the master test kit a few hours after I put the rock in and see how much of a spike it will cause. My 24g Aquapod's mesh bag that held ceramic linings went bad really fast, do I need to replace them for filtration. Also I ditched the bioballs it came with, thinking about getting a nano skimmer to help filtration if need be. Can't wait to start cycling.

FYI nano skimmers are junk! Your better off doing more frequent water changes. I suggest 5 gallons per week.

I agree...I went out and bought a Fission Nano Skimmer, had it in my tank for 3 weeks, and took it out. Now I do a 1 1/2 gal water change weekly on my 12 gallon. However, if you really want a nano skimmer, I'll sell you mine for $30.

I am on the other side of the coin. I love my little skimmer its the cheapest Jebo I could find. Yet every morning it has some crap in it that Im glad is no longer in the tank.
Im curing tonga branch live rock in my new 20long and its chuging away.
Water changes are great, But dont forget the stuff that floats on top, if you have a film, you have a problem.
Oh and I left the 175wt MH 20k on yesterday, day 2 of the tonga rock and I bleached off all the color on the tops of the rocks. So leave your lights out for a few weeks untill your rock cures.

I have one (Nanoskimmer). It is an unusual conversation piece but not a practical piece of equipment.

As far as the film on top goes, you can use the surface skimmer.

If you're talking surface skimmer, I've read that some people have had success with cutting part of a plastic bag and putting it against the intakes for the skimmer, so that only a small amount of the water would pass over it. Others have had the same idea but have actually attached a small piece of plastic.

When they have used the bag, they have just put it in there so the water flow holds it to the skimmer.

I haven't modded my surface skimmer in any way and don't have a problem with film on the water surface.

With a nano, it's so easy to do a major water change rpetty regularly, which seems to make a skimmer unnecessary. If you're a gadget freak, or just have too much money, I suppose it's fun to try to find a working nano-skimmer, but I'll just do a 50% water change every couple of weeks. Just my $.02!

i do have to admit that the 9002 is quite expence. but what from tunze isnt?
