Live Rock

Ok just wondering where all the locals went to get/ordered their live rock? I am close to be ready for a big shipment but just dont know where I should order from. I am broke so price is a major factor. TBS rock sounds amazing but I may end up doing DF&S for about 40 lbs and then cherry picking the rest from local sources. What is everyone experiences with local (anywhere within driving distance) stores or online orders?

Personally I would buy all the rock from local reefers. It much cheaper and most of it will be coming from established systems. You will not have to worry about die off as much and it is less likely to have mantis shrimp or other potentially nuisance animals.

A lot of rock can be found in the area and usually for $2-4 a pound for it.

If have some if interested. It is nothing special but will look nice over time. It would be good base rock and seed it with some nicer stuff.

By the way the TBS water stuff is really nice. I have a friend that his whole tank is TBS and the stuff growing in there is nuts.

what kind of rock and how much are you looking to sell (lb wise) and what are you looking to get from it? I am looking to buy at least 40 pounds to get my tank started.

I have probably 200-300lbs in my sump. I have all kinds. Marshal, Tonga, Fiji, etc. Let me know the types, sizes and quality and then I can give you a price. I can't let anyone cherrypick my sump for $3 or $4 a lb. but I can put together a nice assortment. PM with more info.

well i will describe what i am looking to do and maybe you can let me know what it will cost.... I have a 55 gallon tank and want to start off with a jawfish. I want to leave the left side of the tank open water with a retaining wall of live rock to hold the deep sand for the jawfish (hopefully they realize this area is for them). The right side of the tank I want to be at least 3/4 full. I have about 10 lbs that I picked up today. I am looking to pick up 2 large pieces to be the base for the right side of the tank. Tomorrow I am working and Friday I will probably go see what I can find for rock around the area. As for cherry picking... not looking to pick your choice pieces... I would be greatful for you to pick a selection for me. Let me know what you can do and I will see what kind of cash i can come up with. Thank you for your generosity!!

I have several large pieces, I might even have one that will take up half of a 55 by itself. If you want to keep most of the sand to one side, you will need to put a piece of acrylic or something similar across the tank to keep the sand from sifting through the rocks. If you put any rocks on the sand side, make sure they are resting on the bottom of the tank with sand around them. Otherwise you risk the rocks falling over when the jawfish tunnels underneath them while making his den.
I will look to see what I have for good base rocks and what type of package I can put together for you.

sounds good... i am planning on having all of my rock rest on the glass... I only bought 40 lbs of sand so I figured that the live rock would take up a good portion of the base so I could have a deeper part on one side. I am off until Monday unless something comes up. Even if you just had the big piece and a few others I would appreciate it. I have no problem picking from a bunch of sources... I am picking up a skimmer from goat585 (i think that was who had it for sale) so will probably get some from him. If you are available sometime tomorrow I can give you my cell number or something if that makes things easier. Thanks again!!
