I got a few bags full of sand while at the beach this weekend. Do I need to cure this and if so how. It is full of some type of little clams that are only a quarter inch long. I don't know what they are or if they are good ar bad for my tank.
I have used beach sand for 25 yrs .. but I am pretty particular about the beach I collect the sand from. I tend to collect my sand from beaches that many would consider "pristine". I would not use std beach sand collected from a popular beach .. the risk of having contaminated sand is too great.
Edit
Also note the use of "live" .. if your taking sand from the Ocean water vs stuff that has been sitting on dry land for a long time then you should note that any of the "life" within that sand is going to be acclimated to the temperature of the Ocean where you collected it. If its cold then what ever is "live" is going to die in your tank and you need to try and screen it out before you use it in your tank.
