Live Sand question

If u buy a bag of livesand with water in it,,, do u have to rinse it with freshwater or just open the bad and dump it into the tank,,,, the tank is new,,, nothing is in it...

I would still rinse the sand until the water runs clear, or it will take your tank a long time to clear-up from cloudy water.

Being "live sand," I would have to think it's packaged in saltwater. Rinsing it in freshwater wouldn't be good. Anything live would die. Just dump the bag in, maybe run a filter sock for a few days if the water is cloudy.

I bought a 20lbs bag for my 25 gallons high.. and should I just dump it in the tank ? cause I have water from my old tank and will be doing transfer from a 30 gallons hexagon aquarium to the 25 gallon high..

DO NOT RINCE.

LS is designed to be added strait to the tank. As cloak said, a rince, especially in tap water, will kill everything.

It will cloud up the tank for a couple hours-day depending on your filtration. If you already have stuff in the tank and are totally against the short cloud-up, you could probably get away with rincing it with tank water and replace that with fresh SW>

I added mine a cup at a time and dumped it out of the cup at the bottom of the tank. It still got a little cloudy but not bad and was clear again in a couple hours. If you do it this way you can put it where you want it and keep most of it off of the rock.

Yes, you will be fine.

When my buddy added his in-line fuge, he used 40lbs of LS w/o rincing. It clouded up for a full day in a fully stocked tank and everything was fine. BTW it clouded up so bad you could not even see the back of the tank becouse he made the mistake of stirring it. Take solar's advise and use a cup and DO NOT STIR...lol

A cup at a time would help cut down on the dust cloud and running good filtration will also help cut down the cloud. I have been told that using a pvc pipe and a funnel also helps to reduce the cloud rather then just dumping it in.

I rinsed outside of bad really good. Floated it to bottom of tank and then slit bag with a knife and poured sand in. It created a bit of dust but was clear by morning.

Wab , I've already bought a 20lbs Nature's Ocean bio-activ agragonite. Is it ok to mix the new sand with my old sand in the old tank,, the old sand is 1 year old....

yes you should keep your old sand as it will help seed the new sand with everything in your tank. Just try to get the new sand in and make sure you stir the sand till you get some of the old sand mixed in. if you don't you may sufficate your old sandbed
