Live Sand Questions

In the process of revamping my 55g mixed tank (LPS & softies). Adding a spray bar and have questions about sand. I have always used live sand, but never really had some solid advice on how much should be used. Also have been hearing about deep sand beds but don't know much about them. BB will not work as I simply don't have the flow required to keep it operating smoothly. Could someone please describe DSB and it's pro's & con's compared to SSB? Also, how much sand is appropriate for DSB and/or SSB?

The lower flow does not disqualify you from a BB tank. You will just need to syphon the bottom more.

A SSB does some nutrient processing(1"-2" bed). You can maintain them a little easier, especially if it is in the main display tank. They can be stirred up a little without worrying about causing a mini cycle.

A DSB(5" or deeper) will process more nutrients than a SSB. But if not maintained properly it can become a nutrient sink. More attention to sand bed life and careful maintainence is necessary.

I use what I like to call a MSB(Medium Sand Bed). It varies from 2"-4" deep throughout the tank. I do not have a Refugium to put a DSB and I do not want too much sand in the main tank. It is not pleasant to the eye and it takes away too much space I would rather use for aquascaping. I could live with a SSB, but BB is ugly an unatural looking IMO.

GOOD LUCK
