live sand

I am starting a new reef tank and am wondering if the substrate should consist solely of live sand or can there be a combination of live sand and crushed corals and if so what percentage of each?

I would not waste my money on Live Sand or crushed coral. A $5 container of Southdown or Tropical Play Sand will turn into live sand within 6 months......

When I started the hobby I thought this was important also, but nothing can beat a little time and nature to save you some $$$ in the long run.....

you can add just one or two pounds of live sand to your sandbed to seed it quicker, no need to go all live sand. live rock will do this also. dont go with crushed coral. aragonite sand it the best. or you could go barebottom, but that is a whole other subject.

I agree with no crushed coral. It will work its way to the top and becomes unsightly.
