Hello all. I was just wondering, has anyone ordered live sand from PA and is it good quality? There's really no good places around me for sand, so I need a reliable place. Thanks.
Our Florida live sand will have some bugs, pods, worms, etc, but is more bacterial than anything. If you are looking for a lot of diversity I would recommend our rock pool bottom crude. This is a mixture of mud/sand/small rock particles that have been established in our rock pools for years now. It is absolutely loaded with life. Price on it is $1.49/lb.
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the info. You say there's is lots of life and I need that for my DSB. Would your Florida Aragonite sand be good for seeding regular Aragonite sand? Thanks.
I am going to have to agree with jeremy with the rock pool crud. I got a couple pounds of it to seed my sandbed and it has a ton of life in it, well worth the couple bucks.
The florida isnt bad at all for seeding regular aragonite, although I think the crude is better. Just pull some sand off to the side, fill it in with it, then cover back over the top.
Premium Aquatics, I am setting up a new tank (36lx24dx28h) and was wondering how much mud ($1.49 stuff) do I need for it? I am NOT a big fan of DSB, but I know it is required. Would 2" be enough for the tank? Also, how long do the critters in mud last? Do they need to be replaced? Let me know & Peace.
For a properly functioning DSB I would try to get to at least 3.5" - 4". You can go smaller, it is just not going to function as well. I would use no more than 5lbs of the mud. That is more than plenty to help get you started. The sand fauna will reproduce at a fairly rapid rate and have the sandbed really going with life in just a couple months. If everything is going as normal you should not need to replenish the critters down there. You can always add detrivore kits as well to help with the diversity of the bed.
