Looking for some literature pertaining to the filtration abilities of both liverock and livesand. Especially anything that compares the two and their ability to reduce ammonia to nitrate, and/or denitrification properties. I don't have a ton of experience with the subject however IMO it would seem that livesand has a greater surface area for bacteria to grow on if it is maintained properly. Now personally I'm not 100% sure on what constitutes proper sandbed maintenance however preventing grains from clumping and providing adequate flow to prevent detritus buildup seems like the key. Also how does the flora/fauna of each substrate benefit/damage each biological filters ability to do its job.
