Local Fish Stores

Quick question, have all the stores that aren't orca sponsors been approached to be a sponsor? I know before anyone even asked the guys at ReefWorks to be a sponsor, they were already giving discounts because people ASKED about it. Like Matt mentioned at this meeting and last months meeting, 90% of the time, the LFS owners don't know the difference between ORCA members and not ORCA members because people do not show their cards, and do not mention being a member.

Craig, you mention that many of the non sponsor LFS' purposely don't become sponsors for various reasons. Could you list some stores that have officially stated they will not give discounts and will not become a sponsor of ORCA, after an official ORCA board member has discussed what exactly an ORCA sponsor would be required to do?

I think instead of downing the stores who are not a sponsor, we should work to find out why they are not a sponsor, and to see if they would like to become one.

BTW the sponsor page needs to be updated, I'm not familiar with who is responsible for that, but a couple of the links either do not work or the site no longer sells items.

Also, believe there is a sponsor or two missing.

So if anyone happens to know the guy who updates the website, might want to let him know.

Man its not even hump day and you guys are getting all riled about stuff. The lounge is where you should take your arguments and debates, they are bored at work all day long too and love fodder :)

I kid because I love :)

Wow... very impressive dialogue happening in this neck of the woods...

It sure sounds like there are some folks here with some very passionate views regarding Orlando and surrounding area LFS's. Sorry your thread spun out of control Christie but sometimes threads do become thought provoking and you can see the reaction. Clearly this is a sensitive topic to many.

When I began my 2007 term as ORCA President I knew I had some challenges in front of me. One of the challenges we have is the ORCA Web Site. Its design and concept are good but the utilization is very weak. Everyone congregates here at RC. Not sure if it’s the convenience or the ambiance. With poor utilization comes laziness and lack of attention to detail. At the next board meeting I will bring this to the attention of the Board and the site administrator. Let’s see if we can get our sponsor list accurately displayed.

To those who bubbled up the names of LFS’s both old and new in the earlier section of this forum topic, thank you. In early 2007 I began traveling around the Orlando area trying to canvass for ORCA sponsorships. In between working 70+ hours at work, honey-doo list assignments at home, planning a massive SRC Event and trying my very best to find ways to spur excitement with this club… I am also functioning as the public relations representative, trying to solicit sponsorship from LFS’s that walk a very fine line with this club.

Some of you have been around long enough to know some of the history that plagues this club and it’s relationships with our area LFS’s. Others may be to new in this hobby to know. First off, know that some if not all of the LFS’s have access to and do read threads like this. They become angry and bitter when they read threads condemning them for what one or two hobbyists feel in their judgment is inappropriate. Right or wrong it really doesn’t matter. Once a store becomes alienated it is really hard to bring them back. I keep trying, but threads like this can really undo everything I’m working so hard to change. I really need all your help to represent our club and work with LFS’s to improve our relationships with them. Try as I may, I can’t do it by myself.

Here’s a reality check:
Not all stores run exactly the way we (the reef professionals) think they should…
Some stores have parasites like red bug or planaria in their tanks…
Some stores charge more than others…
Some stores hire young people with minimal or limited experience…

Let’s face it, some stores are better than others and to each his own. Does it mean that a store with flatworms might not have the cheapest IO salt in town..? In other words, find the value each store brings to the table. If you find little or no value don’t shop there, but understand they might actually have value to another hobbyist. They may be bringing value to ORCA in other ways you might not be aware of. With time comes change. Offer assistance if the opportunity presents itself. Some LFS’s are more open to suggestion than others. Be patient and try hard to improve our relationships with area LFS’s. I have been meeting with many of the LFS’s in our area and I see excellent relationships forming with most. We must be careful not to undermine or discourage their support.

I apologize for this long winded reply. I saw this thread and felt I needed to let you all know that your ORCA Board is paying attention. I am paying attention. Please help me out. At our next ORCA meeting, I will open up a section of time during the meeting so that we can spend a little time covering this topic. Maybe through open discussion we can clear the way and move through this awkward topic.

Thanks to everyone for your passion and commitment to this hobby,

My best,

Matt
ORCA Pres. 2007

Excellent reply from a very respected member. I now value my recent membership to ORCA even more than ever after experiencing a highly energetic and enjoyable first meeting last Saturday.

thank you nauti1us!

i haven't been to a meeting in awhile. your post says 2007 term as president, at first i was thinking - wow cschweitzer's comments from the "President emeritus, ORCA". then i looked up emeritus - retired, still still holding onto title! i understand why!

Long-winded? Not at all...very well said. You do a lot for this club, as do our sponsors, and I think that both are sometimes underappreciated. I am not always unbiased in my opinions, but I have attempted to learn from exactly what you said...attempting to keep their support a valuable commodity.

It would be much different at our meetings and SRC if we lost our sponsors...no more raffles, no more benefits. That certainly would be lame. Our sponsors are one of our greatest assets and a major reason the club is where it is today. And on that note, so are you, Matt. Thank you for taking on such a difficult task.

Adj. 1. emeritus -

Honorably retired from assigned duties and retaining your title along with the additional title `emeritus' as in `professor emeritus'; `retired from assigned duties' need not imply that one is inactive

I like Ocean Direct (previously The Fish Bowl) of Longwood.

Greg & George have been great w/ me from day one as a newbie and they don't sell you things just to make money. If your tank/set up won't support the product/fish/coral they will tell you so. I have had great success w/ all livestock/LR/coral I've bought from them, and I've only bought from them.
I will always be loyal to a LFS that is Honest/Willing to Help/Great Customer Service.

ps. No, I don't work there. ;)

Thanks for the kind words regarding Ocean Direct (Fish Bowl) I stopped by there about a month ago to introduce myself to Greg.

Greg agreed to continue to offer ORCA a 10% discount on livestock. However, he did share with me that he feels that despite the discount to club members he never sees ORCA club members in his store.

I can only assume that either what he's saying is true, that not many ORCA members know about his store and don't shop there or... when members do shop there, they forget to present their ORCA club membership cards.

So, I guess my request to any of you that do shop at Ocean Direct in Longwood, plleeeeaaassse present your membership card when you shop there. I would really like those guys to know how much traffic we send his way.

And for those members who haven't shoped there yet, you might want to stop by and take a look. Their prices are very good. Especially on tanks. The times I've been there, the selection has been excellent and unique.

I was thinking about setting up an "ORCA Poker Run" that would encourage members to visit stores that they don't routinely visit. Just to offer a little more exposure to stores in other areas.

I just need to come up with areally good prize for the winner !!!!

hmmmmm.

Matt

The poker run idea sounds like a really good one. Perhaps an east coast run say palm bay to daytona one month, the metro orlando area another etc.. that sounds like a really cool deal. I am interested for sure.

You know, if all these dang stores weren't so far from me, I could have many regular stores(keep in mind, the five minute ride from my house to Racetrac and back is sometimes too much for me). I do need to get out to Ocean's Direct again. Greg always had something interesting going on at his store and I really want to see what he's recently done with the place after all the changes he's made.

Ocean Direct is a great store. We bought my entire tank setup from them, and they are always more than willing to answer questions and offer help.
