My daughter went to the beach and came back with a bunch of hermit crabs she collected on the beach in Stony Brook does anybody know if they are safe to put in your tank?
Most of out local species of hermits are great scavengers, but are aggressive and may eat snails and possible some soft corals...the larger ones may also eat small fish...for that reason I dont keep any in my reef...but should be fine in a FOWLR tank with larger fish and no small inverts...
they are cold water species just like the snails... the warmer water speeds up their life cycle so for most only lasting a couple of years, but there are exceptions ...Ive heard of some lasting a few more years....
