my local petshop has ripped all there tanks down & have set up a complete new system with 2 frag tanks as their centre peice. anyway the water has been added & i asked him are you using cured LR as then you could buy roughly 40KG & put 20KG in each sump they are about 400ltr Tanks each back to back all their equip is tmc, so most of it is crap v2 800 skimmers that kind of rubbish rio pumps sump full of sponge nitrate filter i said he recons no but i no he's lazy & doesn't clean out properly so yes. so i say why are you adding uncured rock to a 30 grand new system, the owners don't no anything about the marine side & believe the guy that runs that part of the shop. this kid sold me over 10 fish in the last 2yr that he said were reef compat yet i bought a batfish got home read up & i was ****ing furious with him. so to the question i asked why uncured rock & his reply was well i spoke to a marine biologist & he told me to use uncured LR you no the stuff with all the nasties aiptasia the normal stuff you get on uncured LR. so i ask you should i say anything to the owners or keep my mouth shut & watch this fool run it to the ground, a bit like he did to the old system. the reason i ask is over the years i'v got to no the owners & they are as good as gold but i'm unsure of how to persue as i don't want him to end up skint thru a dick that knows nothing running new systems into the ground.:reading:

There is nothing wrong with using uncured live rock but you also should use a little bit of live rock to seed the dry rock. If you don't like the way the guy that runs the fish part of the store tell the store owner and they will do what they want with him.

see i think uncured rock normally comes with little nasties unless it's high end LR. from my experience i'v had a lot of trouble with high nitrates & phosphate, as i bought crap rock when i first started of & 2 yr down the line it's still giving me greif. iv thrown most of it out i took a huge peice which was covered in aiptasia, so i boiled the kettle & scrubbed it clean with boiling water cooled it off put it back in tank & half of it was orange were the coraline algae had grown. the aiptasia is totally gone i no i killed the peice at the time but after 3 weeks back in the tank & it's just like the rest a lot cleaner without aiptasia..

Jack, please write shorter sentences. That was difficult to read.

FWIW, the old reefers near me say that when starting a tank to avoid using live rock. This is because they are concerned about what is in the live rock. They want to start as pure as possible.

I am not that bothered by that. I do like the idea of making my own rock though. That way you can come up with some really cool rockscapes.

It was hard to read but he said something about the guy that runs the fish part of the store doesn't know what he is doing because he is using cheep equipment and using dry rock. He wanted to know if he should let the owner know about what his employee was doing.
