Long Brown Stringy Stuff

What is the long brown string that is expelling from the mouth of my zoos?

Please excuse my ignorance if this is normal. This is a gorgeous colony of brown with green skirts zoos.

All parameters are great. Just had my water tested at LFS today.

Please enlighten me?

Thanks in advance!

Do they poop more during certain parts of the day? I'm asking because I have 4 zoo colonies, and I have that brown stringy stuff every where in my 120

Did you just upgrade lighting, clear up your water, or are they new zoas? They could be expelling zooxanthellae due to a change in lighting conditions which is much more likely than a bunch of zoas deciding to poop at the same time...

I did just add new lighting. I went from Power compacts to Metal Halides. It was fine for a few weeks, then all this poop started coming out. I also have been using AZNO3 to lower my nitrate in the tank...any help???

When you get new lighting like that you really need to acclimate things slowly to the more intense lighting. A few layers of fiberglass screening would be a good idea, and then remove one layer a week over the next few weeks. Though depending on how long the lights have been over your tank you may just want to ride it out as is.

So..how long before it stops? Is it polutting my tank..the stuff is hanging all over the rock work...looks like cyno, but brown!!!!

i had that same long brown stuff and it took me 3 weeks to find out that it was my light leaking radation into my tank so please check you lights for hair line cracks asap

also it chokes the life out of your corals over time have to clean (vaccum)daily ,this helps to keep it down but does kill it (i change my lights and poooooooooooof gone.

So all of my lights are brand new. How would I find the crack in the light...all three are filtered by a piece of glass

I don't know the answer to the above question, but I will share this.

My zoo colony WAS new, and the "long stringy stuff" lasted only about 3 hours, and only from 3-4 of the poloyps, and hasn't been back since. The colony seems to be quite happy, indeed it is fully open every day and beautiful. Thanks to Peter for the insight.

I hope this information is helpful to others.
