Long lashes

Hello,
I was curious if tank conditions effect the length of the lashes (or skirt)?

I have noticed that zoas that I have added to my tank tend to develop very long lashes. Is there a reason for this?

thanks

I've heard that if you place your zoas in an area with a lot of flow it would make the skirt long.

I have a ton of zoos and only one colony has long lashes. They are all on a bare bottom with dual 1100 seio blowing across them.

They say is the flow but since i updated to MH some of my zoas develop long skirt too and havent add more flow.. so not sure ill have to add more flow to see if true about is cause of flow ill love to see my zoas with long hair ...

At least for me it doesn't seem to be flow. A couple of my colonies with very long lashes are in fairly low flow areas.

Mine are under T5 lighting.

It;s not light alone, as i have seen a 120 with pc lighitng and long lashed zoas at the bottom, and i have some long lashed up high under 400w. I tend to think it is the flow, not nec. high flow, but random, oscillating flow. He had tunze stream in his tank, and so do, and we both have lashes. I have had some develop long lashes, and they were in a high flow area. All of my zoas that have longer lashes have been in captivity for at least a year, some much longer. The longest lashed zos have been in a tank for over 3 years.

As you can see in this photo, a small colony of long lashed ones is growing amongst a few plain lengthed ones. All the new polyps of the long lashed polyps come out long, and all the new short ones come out short. Of course there could be some that are genetically longer, and some that are longer from conditions.

I think it has a lot to do with age in the system. The zoos I have had for 1+ years, all show longer lashes than newer or WC colonies. I think flow does play a little part in it ias well.

Here is a colony I received from a fellow member. The color difference is mostly camera settings (didn't know what I was doing.)

First pic is from 2 months ago. Second pic is from today.

It could be a number of things. I would not single out the flow, but I would like to add that our zoa's have longer skirts the closer they are to the food supply.

Nearly all of my zoas developed longer skirts after upgrade from 96w PC to 250w HQI mh. I didn't change the flow just lighting.

Maybe it is all of the above, because the zoas are just plain doing better under good light and good flow??

My sun coral had short lashes when I got it, but after 3 months of feeding it every night with different foods, the lashes are now super long. It's not a zoa, obviously, but maybe it knows it is in a good environment for food and light, and grows longer lashes to take advantage of it?

:D
