Longnose Butterfly with Lesions

Barrier Grief

New member
Hello - Longnose butterfly fish in QT for about 3.5 weeks. Started developing these brownish lesions about 5 days ago. Looks normal otherwise, acting normal, eating fine. I'm thinking its either fungal or bacterial, but didn't know if someone may have a more precise diagnosis. Already proactively treated with PraziPro before this even started, but no other meds have been used. Any ideas?

I'm having a little trouble interpreting what the photo shows... it looks like elongated streaks where the skin has been damaged, with little lumps on the side. If those lumps are scales or bits of skin, I think you may be dealing with physical trauma (scrapes). If they are whitish lumps, it could be lymphocystis.

They don't look like bacterial lesions to me but it's possible it's early or the damage could develop into lesions. If the spots deepen and develop a red fringe, that's an indication of bacterial infection, in which case antibiotics are called for.

As far as I know, there are no fungal infections that manifest externally on marine fish.

Check your water parameters, especially ammonia... lesions can be a side effect of poor water.

SAT is spot on IMO. Scrapes or damage done from fighting but it could lead to a bacterial infection.

Kanaplex and furan 2 is a very broad spectrum antibiotic used a lot in the hobby.
