There's really no comparison, you'd be comparing apples and oranges. the x1 is a simple dc motor that controls a pump head, the problem with them is that they don't maintain accuracy for long. the versa removes that variable by using a stepper motor which can maintain precise measurements throughout the life of the motor. Tube deformation is another critical aspect for most of those small peristaltic pumps like the x1, once the tube loses its "springiness", the accuracy drops dramatically. The "homing" feature of the versa stretches the life of the tube to it's very maximum use.
I can go on, but it's not fair to the x1. It comes down to accuracy and reliability. The x1 will work as expected, frequent calibrations and the uncertainty of knowing if it's adding the proper amount of fluid will keep some people awake at night.
The idea that the versa can be used to dose 2 part now and when your corals start to take off and a calcium reactor is needed, you don't have to pay more money for a $300 continuous running peristaltic pump, you already have a pump to do the job.

The thing looks pretty awesome and I go through an ATO pump about once a year. How do you connect this as an ATO? How do you tell it when the Apex wants the ATO to run?

Once a year? wow... Currently the mobius doesn't have an option to use it as an ATO, but an easy solution is connecting the versa power supply to an apex controlled outlet and have it turn power on when the apex calls for rodi water.
All you have to do is have the versa programmed for constant speed and set the desired flow rate with the mobius app.... Super simple...

Will it go through a startup anything?
Wondering if you could use one of the 0-10V outputs to control it.
and yea, at ~13 gal a week, I'm pumping about 700 gallons a year. It may be a year and a half but it is a wear-out part

No, if you have the Versa programmed for constant use, it will automatically turn on when power is applied.
Unfortunately, there isn't any way for it to read a voltage input, Although I have heard whispers of ATO accessories for the Versa, that should be very promising...
Apparently they have been testing this pump for some time and according to this video, they have simulated over 100 years of water changes without needing to replace the tube.

Can this pump be used to dose thawed frozen food, and go in reverse to clean the lines with food like the DOS pumps?

Not at this time, but dosing refrigerated product that require retraction is something they have been considering.
I might be wrong, I would imagine that using versa to feed chunky foods like mysis, brine, clam etc might not be a good fit for it. I would be worried that the food would clog the tube.
