Looking for a pump and opinions

Hello all, I am making the move to a basement sump and am looking for a return pump. Submersible or external, I have a 75 display (upgrading to a 55 sump and adding a 40gal prop system) so would like it to turn over about 500gph at 12-13ft of head. Good turnover rate???

Those with experience or opinions feel free to chime in, with either pump suggestions or any advice in the setup process. I have read people speaking against Mag 18, 24 and 36 as basement returns, what specifically is the issue? Either way, if someone has a pump kicking around let me know, I'm in the market.

Thanks,
Ben

i think the problem with them is they can add heat and they are not pressure rated so flow if very inefficient

The heat doesn't concern me, in fact my basement is awalys 10-12 degrees cooler than my main floor. I was thinking I may need to add a second heater to compensate. However, I would like consistent flow. What external pumps are you all running? Also, is anyone using a larger Mag that has any personal experience with these issues?

we used a mag 36 at work that was throttled WAY back as a return. Heat wasnt a problem in that instance, but flow isn't very linear if/when you have to make any adjustments

Mag's are not good pressure rated pumps, and will not do well in situations where you're moving water against 20-feet of head pressure (that's verticle run plus pipe and fitting friction). Submersibles also add heat to the water - that's a problem in the summer, regardless of the room's ambient temperature - it's the temp. of the water that's a concern, and you're adding heat directly to it, unneccessarily.
An external pressure rated pump is your best bet. Iwaki makes a fantastic line of pumps, that have a great reputation in the hobby. Blueline's are designed by Iwakis' ex- head designer. ;)
