Hey all,

im not sure if i posted in the right spot...but i looked around and wasnt sure where to post

i am looking for a small tank (something in the 5 gallon range) to start a pico reef. I want a tank on my desk at work, but want to keep the higher ups happy with out putting up something bigger then that. at the same time i dont want to spend to much money on a new tank.

if anyone has anything that they are not using...let me know

thanks

Nothing here, but the initial setup cost for a small reef like that can be pretty affordable. Check at petco/petsmart.....for maybe a beta tank. You'd only need a small bag of sand and small amount of rock. The only pricey thing would be a nano skimmer if you choose to run one, and then coral and livestock. Lighting, depending on what your planning for the tank can be very cheap. In something that size it would be very easy to keep some shrooms and zoas, and maybe soft corals and LPS if you like. Lighting can be just a clamp on or a few LED strips. Finding a fish or two to put in a tank that small can be tricky, but they are out there. A Neon Goby pair or Yashia Goby and Pistol Shrimp can make a pretty interesting specimen. Keep us posted on your plans and help can be offered if you'd like.

im glad to see your post reefscape. that was exactly what i had on my mind, so since someone else has a similar thought that means im on the right track.

i do know that petsmart has some sort of tank, but i was just trying to avoid shelling out money to the big guys for now. i was gonna check on here first and craigslist. then the LFS before the giant stores. Just want to try and reuse some stuff out there and put it to good use instead of it collecting dust in an attic

as far as the stock, i was thinking one goby, 2 hermit crabs, maybe a shrimp and the rest would just be coral.

Sounds like a good idea for a setup to me! I've been thinking about setting up my old 20g for a while now and kind of want to base it around a pair of Neon Gobies and SPS

i say go for it. i have a 55 gallon FW, 10 gallon FW breeder and an empty 29 gallon now that I want to turn into a SW reef.

all i am waiting for is, if i buy a house, maybe building in a bigger tank, or just keeping the 29 gallon but building a bookcase/stand for it

Not sure if you ever make it to the Binghamton area. If you do I bave a 5 gallon and a 2.5 that I don't use. Also, there is an area here on Reef Central dedicated to pico tanks. There are all of them on there and a good source of inspiration.

A bit OT, but I saw where it says you are a lab tech and was wondering where you work in Ithaca John? I lived there for most of this decade while I attended school and then for a bit afterwards.

Hey Tad,

I actually work across the street from IC in a polymer research lab. Its just a small startup. Where did you go?

I graduated from Cornell in 06. Lived in Ithaca till almost 2008. Didn't get up by IC much though. Sounds like a fun job though.
