looking for advice on the Popeye catalufa (aka: soldierfish)

Tar Heel

In Memoriam
Ive done searches here, and on other reef forums, read threads... read all about them, but just cant find anyone talking specifically about their fish. any issues? how long have they lived in a tank?

The LFS I got my Achilles Tang from got one in, and due to the tang going missing after only a week, he said he would hook me up on another fish.

I think it looks cool, and would fit in with my other fish... anyone know anything besides what they read online? any first hand experience?

He has had it about 2 weeks now, and it swims around a lot, and eats regularly.

I don't know much about them but think they are sweet! I have a ton of light over my fowlr though and didn't sound like they would be happy in a super lit setup.

They are pretty easy going fish if they are decompressed properly. They like to eat so be careful what you put in there with him.

They are prone to mechanically induced exopthalmia (popeye) so be careful that they don't whang themselves on a rock or in the net when captured. Also, their ctenoid scales and long dorsal spines get caught in nets really easily.

I've not tried one in a reef, but since they don't like bright lights, I'd say they will not appreciate bright reef lighting, or if able, will hide in caves during the day.
