Looking for DYI UPS system

Remember kids, those Trojans are Golf Cart batteries, 6v and tons of capacity. They are far superior to most marine batteries. The only problem is you need 2 to get 12v out of them. However if you have space for one you can probably find the extra space for two.

... and each Trojan battery is more $ than a regular deep cycle battery. They are THE battery though, for deep cycling.

So 2 deep cycle 750MCC or 750AH 12 volts would be better then the 2 Trojan batteries 6V? If space is not an issue :)

Thanks
Simon

Cant see your pic Bean, but it probably looks like one of the battery rooms at one of the water plants I worked at. It was like a Home Depot full of batteries.

A Coworker with a whole mouth full of silver teeth could not go in the humid room, it hurt his teeth!:D

Mining Scoop - Battery.jpeg

The back end (left hand side) is the batteries. This piece of equipment weighs in at about 6 tons and can move as much in it's bucket. It is battery over hydrualic (IE all of the motors are hydrulic). You can see the operators compartment just behind the front wheel (the thing with the little safety chain).

Not relevant here, but just wanted to show what a good wet cell array can do.

Yes, I have been in large wet cell room for a data center, about 1400 deep cycle wet cells. Not something to take lightly due to the HUGE amount of current available on the bus bars. Like I said that scoop power plant is enough to make you wish you never got near it. The cells are all tied with metal bus straps. The coal dust (carbon) is a good conductor. Lean over and touch the cells while your watering them and you can end up right on your butt.... and thats just from carbon tracing. I can't imagine getting between the poles, I imagine you could get kilt ded rather quickly.

The batteries on the scoop? I dunno maybe $15,000 for a new battery pack on a small scoop... maybe double that on a large one. Top of the line stuff, maybe 3x or 4x times that.

Find a local golf course, they usually save up their older ones and would be happy to have someone pick them up and take them away for free.
