Looking for LFS in Tampa for weekend!

yeah i would have to agree. FAOIT is awesome. i think i got more for the 100 dollars i spent thier than i have at any other fish store around. he keeps his tanks very neat. i like that. shows pride in his work. hes not out to just make money. but of course his family likes to eat to. keep up the good work john. wish you were closer. thats my only gripe. LOL

i dont have any store loyalty what so ever. i go to whom has what i want for that day. but i will say this.
Johns store is the ONLY store i have been to in which the owner himself (john) said dont buy that. this was dont not to make a bigger sale but because he knew it would not have been good for my particular system. a great store in my book. if it was closer i would go much more often.

ya just have to learn to take john for who he is lol.
if you want a big hug and ballon when you walk in the door your at the wrong place hahaha. but if you want to go to a store that will give you straight up answers with no fluff hes your guy.

I'm visiting florida and will be there tomorrow (sunday). So what kind of interesting things are there at Itchy Things? And also this thread hasn't answered the question yet, where are all the really cool LFS with the nice stuff?

For no b.s. and no car lot sales pitches, healthy quality corals & fish, and unbeatable drygoods prices, my reccomendation for an LFS in the tampa area is Fish and Other Ichthy stuff. Marine warehouse, which is only a couple of miles east of FAOIS, is hit or miss, but you can sometimes hit the jackpot and find some jewels in there without breaking the bank.. Might as well stop by there too. My expeirience with Finz (formerly known as Creative Oceans), was that alot of the prices were a lttle unrealistic. and the guy I talked to seemed like he'd say anything to make a sale...

ah thanks. I kinda skipped most of the stuff above due to drama. I'll definitly drop by itchy stuff! Now just out of curiosity, how many of you guys just head down to the waters and get your own critters like snails and hermits?

You don't want anything that comes out of the local waters here. It's a Nitrate / Phosphate sewer!! Thanks to the political founding fathers ultimate wisdom in allowing gross polluters such as the fertilizer industry to occupy most of the Tampa coastline and run uncontrolled for decades :eek2:

Gee, do you think any of last years Red Tide had anything to do with the poor water params in Tampa Bay? How can anyone compare a tank crash to the crash Tampa Bay & the Gulf of Mexico experienced last summer?

not this again.
john do you think red tide would return year after year if it didn't have so much to feed on as stated above?
makes me wonder what the water looked like when they named clearwater. was it really clear or dark brown like now? I've seen the causeway look nice maybe 2-3 times since I have lived here.
back to the thread I like fish and other ichthy stuff and finz of tampa the best. the rest to me fall in the marginal category to me. rockin reef, marine warehouse, all about aquariums, aquatic visions, coral reef aquariums, one in holiday I can't remember the name it used to be fishy business. exotic aquatics is above marginal but not the same stock as the top 2.
thats all I can think of. if there are more I just don't know of them.

For those of you in the Largo area, there's a new small LFS on the corner of Ulmerton and Belcher. Small but nice, and good prices. It seems it's most stocked on Tuesday's and Wednesday's.
They take really good care of their stock.

Well went to Fish and other Itchy stuff and boy is that place nice. Lots of nice dry goods, decent prices, and good looking tanks. Even got some rare fishes. I picked up some neon gobies and boy John can really bag them up. Best bagging of fishes I've ever seen in my life. If your in Florida its definitly worth a stop here. Heck I'm from San Francisco and even with all the nice shops around me , I'd rate this shop pretty high.

When I took a ASA sailing class up in Hernando Co. , the captain was telling us that back 25-30 years ago, the water really was "clear" and Clearwater did deserve its name, but unless they enforce draconian measures on industry, it will never go back to that state.

I kind of concur with bilybong. I have been to restaurants were the food was great but the service was horrible. I never went back because of it. It is a shame when your a vender with a great product but you scare customers away.

I stopped in to Fish and Other Ichthy Stuff this past weekend when I was in Tampa visiting my daughter. Great store! Beautiful livestock, well cared for and great prices. I don't see how anyone could go wrong shopping there. To be truthful, I went to scope it out since everyone I know speaks very highly of the store and the owner's knowledge. I only hope that my store comes close. I introduced myself to the owner and he was very nice and forthcoming with info for a newbie owner in Orlando. I very much appreciated his taking the time to talk to me and both he and his wife seemed to be very knowledgable and the customer service was excellent. No dead fish floating in the tanks and the fish looked very healthy...no apparent disease, ich...just beautiful fish and corals. I would absolutely say that this store is a must if you appreciate top livestock at very reasonable prices. Thanks again, John, for your time. Marcye

IMO, lowering the standards that I hold myself or my patrons to would be horrible customer service.

Yeah, true it's no Wal-Mart, I was hoping to get a Happy Face Sticker. But Oh well, I loved my first visit to FAOIS and will go again. It's just so far.... But well worth it.
