I FOUND THAT I NEED ABOUT 4O MORE POUNDS OF LIVE ROCK AND I HAD AN IDEA....... mOST PEOPLE HAVE AT LEAST A COUPLE POUNDS OF LIVE ROCK IN THEIR SUMPS OR IN ANOTHER TANK, OR SOMEWHERE THAT IS JUST SITTING THERE..... WELL, I AM LOOKING FOR THOSE PEOPLE...HAHAHA, WELL, I NEED TO FIND LIVE ROCK AND REALLY ANYTHING WILL HELP. I WILL BE AT THIS MONTHS ORCA MEETING AND CAN ACCEPT DONATIONS THEN........WOW, I MUST SOUND REALLY CHILDISH NOW, BUT HEY, ONE OF MY MOST FAVORED SAYINGS IS "IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK". aNYTHING FROM RUBBLE TO 100LBS WOULD BE GREAT, I MEAN ANYTHING, I AM JUST LOOKING FOR SOME GOOD ROCK TO FILL MY TANK. i WANT THIS TO BE A *PERFECT* TANK, AND THAT MEANS GOOD LIVE ROCK, I AM TRYING TO SAVE AS MUCH AS I CAN, AS I AM ALREADY BROKE AS IT IS....... reefkeeping is an expensive hobby... if you're having issues getting rock for the tank, maybe you should consider going smaller. maybe a nice nanocube or something. Just My opinion... good luck either way...

You know you seem like a DIY guy with your dad and that nano set up Seth.. have you considered that if it does take a while to get that 75 up and running really well to make your own? Or go with not-live baserock?

Yeah thats what I did. I went with about 50/50 base and live rock, im going to go find a before and after picture.

Sometimes you just gotta learn how to cut corners. Beggings going to get you no where, its only going to annoy people...

I would personally say, sell some stuff to be able to buy it. Most all of us bought our own rock too. Personally, if I was your age, I'd stick with a nano and save my cash up. I wouldn't do anything to big till you have a job that can easily support it and still be able to go to school and get a degree. Maybe talk to a fish store and see if they will sell you some at cost in exchange for some work.

Well said Jay, those were my sentiments exactly.

I know I want a big tank sooo bad right now, but I know that it is just not in my budget. I feel as though I'd rather have my 30g done right, than have a big tank thats thrown together and making me broke.

lol, I was thinking the same thing, yeah this hobby is expensive! I too started with like 10 - 20 pounds and everthing else was dryied base rock.

Seth, something to think about. The more places you get rock from, the more "problems" you can get. For example, you end up with some bubble algae from one hobbiest, aptasia from another, a pistol shrimp from here, a bad crab from there, and so on and so on. If you get your stuff from less "places" the risk goes down a lot more......

Just something I should have thought about when I was getting pieces from "here and there".

something else that made sense to me recently. tell me if yall think I am way off base with this. You need liverock to "filter" for your dirty dwellers. Things that make waste, mainly fish, crabs, and shripm. Most corals dont produce any waste. So, I would think that a 100 gallon with 50lbs of rock and a low population would be fine. My 5 gallon has no fish, crabs, or shrimp and the parameters stay very constant. I actually have more problems with getting coraline algae off the acrylic than anything else. I think this is because I have low bioload and a decent amount of rock for the size of the tank.

What I am saying is that you could just go light on the "dirty" crew until you get the rest of what you need.

MFP has some valid points there, dont be afraid to go the diy method and let it become live as time goes on this will allow you to save cahs for fish and nice coral. A few well picked fish will make you much happier than a bunch of rubble rock you get for free. Low bioload and patients will work well.

Well, i loked into the GARF atuff, and that was way too complicated..... i thought it was much easier than that, and i dont know where i could find half the stuff needed to make it. I just baught another 20 pounds of BR from aqua-holics, and i now have about 1/3 ratio of live/base rock.....

fishbowl in longwood sells live rock for 3.99 a pound in case anyone needs to pic some up cheap. thats the cheapest I have found yet. actually, they changed there name from fishbowl to something else....but I dont remember the new name. Im sure some on here must know it

but is it good rock/ Aqua holics sells "LIVEROCK" for $5 or $6 a pounds, but that rock has no coraline, and only brissleworms.....their premium stuff is the $9 stuff......

Also in Lake Mary fishy business had dried base rock, it's very light and about a $1 a pound, I have not been to that place in a while so not sure how much would be now.

But you see, both places are WAY too far for me to go. My dad had to take me to Morgans house, which is only about a mile away, and he was complaning, and grounded me because i was persistent about him taking me......if anybody if goign to be goign to this place, please let me know, i will buy it off of you if you get it. butreally, only if you will be at this months meeting, that woud be the easiest....
