You aren't supposed to use dowflake any more. They changed thier mix. I have some Tetra flake that i have been using. I haven't had any issues with it and i'm on my second batch. You are welcome to bring a jug and get some. I have a 50# bag and it only take 2 1/2 cups to make a gallon. I think i can spare a little bit lol. I have never used or tried to find the Magflake before, i just use the epsom salt recipe.
The Dow 77-80% is supposed to still be good until they run out. The new 83-87% flake is the one that you don’t want to use anymore. Where did you find the Tetra flake? Is it the mini-Pellets 94% - 97%?
The Tetra flake i have is 77% min. calcium cloride flake not pellets. I got it at a local pool supply. Most swimming pool supply stores have a variety of calcium products. I bought this before i read the whole article on mixing Randy's recipe lol. It has worked fine for me though and hasn't caused any issues. I have been using it about 6 months or so. I have used about 1 1/2 gallons of the mix so far.
I think my Tetra flake cost $22 for a 50# bag. There is nor reason to buy that much though. I just bought it because it was all they had in stock at the time. That much will last you forever. It only takes 2 1/2 cups to make 1 gallon.
I bought a 50 lb bag for about $35. They had a couple more bags of the dowflake at the bottom of the stack. On top of it were several bags of some other brand I can't remember. So if you call the Oviedo store and ask them to look at the bottom, they may still have a bag. My bag is the 77-80%.
I do have to buy it in 50 lb bags MY first 50 lb bag lasted about a year and a half I think. My tank is taking about 2 gallons per month right now in addition to some kalk...
I got the Tetra flake at Pool Works in Mount Dora. They may have the Dow in stock also, they were just out of it when i went to get mine. I probably have 15 or 20 pounds of the tetra that wouldn't fit in the bucket that you are welcome to if you want it.
If they end up having it at pool works, let me know before you go get it. I still got hook ups there i think. I think it is normal $35, but my son used to work there and still knows people there. I may be able to still get the $20 price for ya.
