Looking for opinions on deep sand bed

So I've read some mixed info on deep sand beds, are they good for reefing in the long term?

There are a lot of opinions on this subject, but negative and positive.

All I'll say is I have a 2'x2'x8" DSB that has been running for 5 years now. To be fair, I also have a 2'x2'x16" refugium mostly full of Chaeto. That said, I have zero nitrates every time I test (not very often any more) and on a 400g system I average a 25g water change about once every 3 months.
