Looking for plans for a Large Media Reactor

When my skimmer kicks in and starts doing its job, it stinks up the entire back part of my house. I am now running a phosban reactor packed with carbon. It keeps the water clear and the odor down some but, with a tank full of triggers and groupers and the way I have to feed them, I need more carbon. The tank is a 300 gallon tall and I am using a mesh modded euro reef cs8-4 with two sedra 5000 pumps. Any suggestions on a bigger media reactor that I can efficiently run all of my water thru several times per hour?

I built mine on a smaller scale for a 125 gallon tank using a spaghetti acrylic container with an airtight lid. I imagine you could use some type of bucket with a gasket that makes it air/water tight the same way. Drill a hole in the top and another in the bottom SIDE of the bucket. Attach bulkheads and plumb them to their own pump or use a "t" from the return line. Hope the idea helps you out. Keep us updated.

Also for the filter media use pond filter media. I got mine at Lowes and it was about 10 bucks for 2 fairly large size peices. You can find it usually in their gardening or pond section.

why not use a good ol' canister filter?

fluval, rena, eheim...all excellent canister filters that come in sizes big enough for chemical media only for your tank.

i see absolutely zero difference between canister filters and 'media reactors'. they appear to be the same in every respect in design and function.

i know that this is the diy section but it still puzzles me why canister filters get a bad rap in the reef hobby when they, again, are the exact same thing as a 'media reactor'.

eheim has been making canister filters for what seems like an eternity. when they appear to have achieved perfection, they improve on their design for efficiency and ease of use...again and again.

well, since this is a diy thread...

here is my external 2g zeovit reactor. it sits on top of my sump (yes, it is a large'ish sump) open air. it is also fluidized. in theory, any media can be used. zeovit rocks, carbon, gfo...heck, even a refugium if one wants it to be so.

design different? yes. why? because it is a zeo reactor and the stones require agitation for the system to work properly.

cost? $20 because i wanted to be fancy with NEW buckets and uniseals. it reality, it can easily cost a fraction of that to nothing if one has scrap parts lying around (and what reefer doesnt have spare parts lying around!?!:D)

oh, and dont silicone the uniseals...this makes them LEAK!!!!!

pressure alone from the pvc pipe usually seals them 'okay'...i have yet to see a fully water tight uniseal. every one of them have some form of slat creep...
