Looking for small mantis.

I have one but it will cost ya for there has only been one other like it ever in captivity and the University of Cal. is studying it as we speak!:D

This is the only pic I have found that is a dead ringer for it!

Someone had sent him/her to me for an exchange and then I had a proffessor wantto buy it from me but I don't want it to be dissected and analyzed! I think it is a haptosquilla cause of it being reclusive but what made it very cool was it actually dug itself a little hole in the rock to live!! I don't know much about these creatures but it kept me up all night watching it do this!

$100!

And I dont know if it is a smasher or slasher but it is FAASSTT! He stays in his man(tis) made little hole in the rock almost all the time!

It is a smasher. It is a type of haptosquilla. I have a haptosquilla glyptocerus and it is a smasher. She is pretty damn fast and isn't as shy as I have been led to believe. I got her for free, btw. Not worth $100 IMO, but that may be because I have gotten 2 little mantises for free recently with another person who will give me another if I help him catch it.

Jason, how many mantises do you have now? Every time I pop in here it seems like you're getting another one :D Do either of yours have the coloration of the one in the pic? I have not seen that before.

My G. chiragra is still hanging out in the sump, I'm waiting to get a new pump then going to set her up w/ a minibow 5.

ummmm... well, I have 4 at the moment, but I think I am going to give one away. I finally broke down and bought a peacock and am quite happy with her. I will post on her later.
As for my haptosquilla, she is dark brown with white spots down her carapace - not striped like shown above.
Why the need for a pump on the minibow? Are you plumbing it to your existing system?
BTW, my other mini smasher (less than an inch) is an N curacaoensis. They are supposed to be less than hardy but mine is still kicking in its minibow 2.5

Oh yeah, funny story about my 2 mini smashers. I had the haptosquilla in the minibow 2.5 and she totally disappeared. I searched everywhere for her - even took apart the filter looking for her. There wasn't even any rock in at the moment, just a pvc pipe and some chaeto. I became convinced that she jumped out and got eaten by the cat. So when the opportunity arose for another mini smasher I jumped on it. 2 days after I got the new mantis I was looking in the tank, noticing that he was out and about. I left the room and came back then tripped out when I saw a slightly bigger mantis sitting where the other one just was. I looked again and saw both of them in the tank acting like the other didn't exist. When I came closer, the haptosquilla went nuts and zipped around the tank like a crazed mantis. I bought one of those 3/4 gallon tanks for her and she seems to be fine with it.

So 4 of em now? Wow you're addicted for sure. Didn't take long.

That was a good story. So I wonder where the heck the first mini smasher went? I have found that mantises are pretty good at hiding out. A couple of times now I got all worried that my Gc got sucked into my return pump and pulled my sump apart only to find her in the refugium afterwards, looking at me like 'what the hell are you doing?!?'

Re. the pump, yes I'm plumbing the minibow 5 into my 75. I'm getting a new return pump to handle the whole system so I'm just going to tee off it, then overflow back into the sump.

I was including the little nano in the price. Do the haptosquilla usually dig in the rock like that? It was driving me nuts the first night!!

Hey I have a 125 reef and a few other tanks scattered about but I am really interested in getting a mantis. Anyone have one they are trying to get rid of other than senor 100 dollars ? ? ?
