looking for snorkeling spots.

Hey gang,

The wife and I are coming to Miami for vacation. Staying in Surfside.

My dive buddy (wife) is pregnant and we have a 2 year old. this creates a problem for me as I'd at least like to get some snorkeling in.

Does anyone know of any spots near there that are shore accesible for snorkeling?

I don't want to go out on a dive boat as this will leave my wife alone for too long.

Thanks,
Timothy McCandless

john pennykamp marine park. snorkel right next to the beach. lots of fish from snook to puffers to angels. it even has a small indoor aquarium as well. very family friendly.

Second John Pennecamp... if you want to look at inverts, go to Harry Harris State Park not far from there. Inside the swimming area is an ecosystem all its own, with some really cool grass flats type stuff, and when you get bored of that, snorkle the jetty and see lobster, eels, anemones, lots of shrimp and small tropicals.

Are there any places that specifically have very shallow reefs or good tide pools or lagoons for collecting? Maybe 5ft at the deepest?

You can collect at Harry Harris (not a state park), but the collecting there isn't so hot. The best collecting spots I have found are in the middle keys along any rocky shoreline you can find. Remember to take a dive flag when you get in the water guys!

Stellablu, you can try collecting at phil foster park on blue heron bridge. I hear the hurricanes messed the park up quite a bit, but if you look around you will find a few interesting things.

Wouldn't the jetties at Haulover and Port of Miami be good places to snorkel? I know that the south jettie at John Lloyd was always a good place to look at tropicals. It is a lot closer than the keys also.

I know that the Haulover jetty has no swimming signs, but I'm not sure obout the other jetties in South Florida.

Hey gang,
Thanks again for the info. I am actually from Orlando originally and have spent a lot of time diving and snorkeling the keys. Came accross quite a few spots there. Got some really nice lime colored flourescent zoos in the middle keys area.
I was hoping to find something in the Miami area, since we are on vacation and have a 2 year old and wife is pregnant I was hoping not to travel too far or should I say, I was hoping to just find somewhere very close to the south beach area.

Thanks again for all your help,
Tim

Chris you have a specific place to snorkel in the keys? Like a specific beach or mile marker? I'm not to familiar with the keys, so I don't really know where the middle keys are.

just remember if you do any collecting. it may be good to bring a small bag of salt with you to create your own water. the water has enough plankton in it to sour very quickly. read anthony calfo's coral propagation book for details. ive also experienced it first hand.
