I want to get ahold of some Stomatella snails:

and some money cowries:

Just like four of each... two of each variety to each tank. Anyone have any or know when I can obtain them? I never see anything but the typical fare at the stores.

I've seen the chestnut/money cowries at Southwest Saltwater and for $9 each. Little pricy for a snail. BUT, I believe they are temperate snails just like the black margarita snails; unless they were found/raised in tropical conditions etc etc etc........

I've read that certain varieties of cowry snails are temperate, others appear to be tropical. From a book I've got, the money cowrie is one of the best cowrys to have in a home aquarium.

RW - I'm headed to bed, I'll give you a call this evening to arrange something!

Wow - I'm so glad you posted that picture. I must have a stomatella snail. I had no idea what it was. Why are you looking for one - do they have special powers? ;)

stomatellas are algae grazers, will reproduce in your tank and don't look like astreas and turbos etc... They're also mostly nocturnal and I rarely see the one I have during the daytime.

For the longest time I thought I only had one Stonatella in my Picotope... Turns out I have two and they are pretty cool. Mine are now constantly out during the day.

Anybody who took chaeto or rock from me in the last year likely has stomatellas. They reproduced like mad in my 57g. When they reproduce, the male stands up high on his foot and ejects gametes into the current. It looks like he is blowing smoke rings. I had the good fortune to witness it several times in the last few years. It's one of the cooler things I saw happen in my tanks. Good luck with these new cleaners.
