Looking for something to eat red algae on sand

I’ve got a lot of red algae on my sand and wanted to know what my options are to get rid of it. I know I could use RO/DI water but a unit just doesn’t fit the budget. I’ve been cutting back on light hours and increased the flow but it’s not working. I’m open to a sand sifting fish however I’m worried about tumbling rocks. I recall reading something about a specific snail that would eat it. It’s so thick sometimes it acts like a carpet! It's a 55g FWLRO and one Niger Trigger.

You'll spend far more fighting problems that you will if you start using RO/DI. It's a money saver, not an extra expense.

FoxFace Lo will do it, and every kind of algae. red-leg hremits sometimes will if there is no food for it to scavenge. what kind of water are you using?

BTW, photoperiod decrease doesnt effect red alga. it descends in darkness and comes back out in the light. so lighting change will not help.

also, algae is plural. alga is singular. FWIW.

Currently I’m using tap water run through a PUR water filter; I figure running it through some sort of filter is better than nothing at all. Even if I could afford an RO/DI I couldn’t get one because I’m currently renting, unless there is a unit that I could attach to the sink or another faucet in the house. I live with five other people and I doubt they’d want an RO/DI unit in the way. How does the unit attach exactly? I really dislike the look of a FoxFace Lo (It’s the one fish I don’t like, lol) so I don’t want to get one. Any snails or urchins that would do it? I've noticed that the alga almost completely disappears at night, I don't know it just descended, very interesting...

tap water=phosphates = red cyano bacteria
I am also renting and living in an apt.
what Im doing now is, I found a vending machine inside a local grocery store that dispenses RO water and tested it for phos. and it came out zero.and to keep phos down in the tank I have Phos reactor, Ive been holding out on getting an RO/DI unit for a long time, but by next month I should have one, sorry to say but theres not really a good shortcut to the problem
