Looking to buy DI resin and housing

Tony and all,

what are your thoughts on rechargable resin?

I just replaced ( not refilled) my resin and filters on my Ro/DI and, with the old unit showing 0-1 as an end result, now shows 16-28 as an end result.

Please spare me the obvious "shoudn't have changed it"! ( thanks )

Rainer,
If I recall, rechargable resins require certain chemicals to actually recharge them (muriatic acid?). If that's the case, I would prefer to just replace the resin all together. I don't believe refill quantities are that expensive anyways.

Did you happen to replace the other stages at the same time as the resin? If you did, then I might look at how well each of the stages are seated into their housing. If you didn't, then make sure the resin is packed in there well. If it's not packed tight, there could be a channeling effect that causes the water to bypass a lot of the resin. Have you "broken in" the unit after replacing the resin? I usually have to drain about 50 gallons before mine drops back down to ~0 PPM.

On a side note, I've read that it's a good idea to replace your primary stages at least every year, even if you are still getting ~0 PPM(or whatever you normally get). Doing this will extend the life of the RO membrane, which is obviously more expensive than the other stages.

This will be the first time I've used a refillable DI resin/housing (previous DI cart. was not refillable). Whats the trick to filling it properly (no channeling)? You mentioned "packing" the resin? Any suggestions?

I replaced all other cartridges about a month ago except for the RO membrane (and DI of course). TDS around 5, but it is time to change the DI....been up and running for about 16 months.

Tony,
I would just lightly push on the resin to compact it. You want to pack in as much as possible, so it can't be pushed aside from water flow. As I'm sure you know, but others might not, you need to keep an eye on the resin as it tends to shrink in size as it gets used. As it shrinks, it creates more room inside and you're more likely to channeling. I will usually pack in a little more every few months.

I have recharged resins before. It is a real pain- especially if they are mixed. Uses strong acid and base, and stinks! Not worth it IMO.
I have been getting my resin from buckeye supply, as well as my other filters for the ro.

Sorry forthelate reply:

Ken,yes, I did replace all 3 stages. Today, during a water change I figured I replace one of the new component with one of the old components ( since my readout was 0 beofre) and, law and behold, replacing the prefilter ( 1st stage) brought it down to 3 again!

So, you may be right about the proper seating, or, it was just a bad pre-filter!

Thanks,

Rainer

p.s.: the price of the resin isn't that bad and I agree to chage rather than recharge
