I would normally place this in Ad section, but I want to pick it up localy.

If you have Southdown Play Sand available that you have stockpiled behind your house (or elsewere) I'd be interested in buying it. Please PM me immediatelly.

Your PM box is full.

I am looking for Southdown Play Sand that used to be sold at Home Depot store specifically. Do you have any leftover bags to verify what you have used?

Obviously it is your choice but playsand is not a good idea for substrate.

Go with caribsea aragonite, $20 a bag but very much worth it.

Southdown Playsand is 100% araganite that comes from the same supplier where carib-sea gets it. Problem is Home Depot no longer distributes it.

Xoomer,

I do not know what kind of sand it is. However, I do know this sand came from Home Depot many years ago.

The reason, is I had my landscaper put in a large area of play sand with a swing set for my kids.

PS. You have to be kidding about saving a bag. I can not verify what kind of sand it is. Only that it was sand that I think my landscaper used when he bought the supplies to build my swing set area.

I didn't mean save a bag but rather, if you had another bag lying around somewhere. I've had a 50lbs punds just sitting in the basement for years which was useless and I gave it to my friend, only to look for the same stuff 6 month later.

Thanks anyway seldin..

oh and BTW saldin, not knowing what kind of sand is in your sandbox is not good for you or your children either. google "silicosis"

Xoomer,

This sand has been in my back yard for over 10 years. My kids no longer use the playground area.

However, having a sandpit play area was a great idea. My kids had ton s of fun. Many of my neighbors' kids would not want to play with their swing sets. It seems the sand pit where the kids can play was a big attraction.

So at this point, having my kids outgrown the swing set, I am not too worried.

I heard a rumor thats the reason it harder to obtain because they found out it was being used by the aquarium industry and their sale of carib- sea which alot more expensive was going down.......anyone got any further info?

Not a rummor. Both Southdown and Carib-Sea were getting the sand from the same supplier down in FL. Carib-Sea was selling to reefers while Southdown was selling the same exact sand as safe playsand (100% aragonite, 0% silica). Carib-Sea learned that people like you and I found out about Southdown and because of their non-compete agreement with the supplier forced Southdown to mark their bags "Not For Aquarium Use". Little later Southdown was bought over by mexican company CEMEX (cement manufacturer) and they just never carried the sand again. Home depot had to find another supplier but the sand is completely different.

That sounds about right. I bought it under a different name once, they changed the packaging a few times, but then it seemed to go away totally.

I also wouldn't use sand that has been outside for many reasons. Animal urine being the main one.

i went searching for this about 2 months ago. .. no luck. try getting sand from someone getting out the hobby. it will be the next cheapest option.

ps, u might want to look up a similar product on the boards. i forgot the name but it was something like pavestone limestone. do a search on the popular reef site for alternative southdown.

Southdown/YardRight has been the holy grail for a couple years now.

If you find any I'll take a few bags, as would probably everybody in the area. I remember a guy from ManhattanReefs was going to drive to Pittsburg or somewhere to get a pallet a year or so ago, but someone else beat him to it.

^^^ go figure. The same stuff Carib-Sea sells for $20 for 20Lbs, Home Depot Used to sell for around $4.00 for 50Lbs. I don't expect to get it at that price but If the seller is willing to part with it at decent price, I'll take it.

I have what was about 200# of it sitting in a cooler in my back yard its probably more like 100-150# now as i have tossed it or given some away

its gotta be cleaned out but anyone who wants is more than welcome to it free of charge.

I would say send me a pm but i dont get those you can email me tho

keith@keithandpam.net im in bellport. and i got it about 3-4 years ago now.
