Looks like I need to cool down...

Test running my MH lamp over my 10g and it appears right now that I'm going to need to reduce my temp about 3 - 4 degrees or so. I have a fan I can install to see if that will do the trick for me, but I'm wondering...what direction should it be aimed? Should it be blowing on the water surface? Just into the canopy itself (canopy is open top and open back)? Or turned opposite and trying to pull warm air out of the canopy area?

Opinions?

Thanks

Have it blow directly at the water surface. Maybe going across it rather than straight down on it. This will increase evaporation rate, which is what cools it. Its like when you sweat. If its a hot day and you're all sweaty and then you get a nice breeze go by, it makes the sweat feel cool. Thats because its evaporating. Same thing with tank water :)

Sweet....I did kind of a temporary install of a fan and have had it and the light running for about 4 hours now and it's still rock solid at 80 degrees. Has not raised at all since turning the light on.

I have my fans blowing in. However I'm really not sure that it makes a difference.

Run some tests to see if there is a difference. I can't however think of why this would be the case. Either way the same amount of air should be passing over the water. I guess if you have it blowing in you can aim it directly at the water and thus increase the amount of air contacting the water. So.. anyways, as I ramble on.... Point it in.. (?)

Right now, the rig job I have going is that the fan is near the top of the canopy, pointing at about a 45 degree angle towards the water. I had the heater set at 80 degrees, checked it when I left for work this morning to make sure that's where it would be overnight with no light on, and again when I got home today. I then installed the fan and turned the light on. I've been watching it ever since then, checking every hour, and it has not budged at all, so right now I'm pretty happy that something as simple as this fixed a little problem and now I can start readying things to move from holding back into their home tank. :)

That's good.

I kind of lucked out with my fan too. With my lights on and the fan on together my temperature sits at a nice 77.8 degrees ( without heater ). So I didn't have to play around with angles and fan speeds and everything. It's nice when things come together properly, huh?

So far, so good. I'm starting over with a lot of new rock now, so we'll see how that goes. I hate new tank syndrome.

Yeah i'm starting up a new 10 or 15 L right now..

I asked about your lighting on another thread, but has the illuming.com MH kit worked out so far?

It looks like a great deal, I just hope it's not too good to be true.

Works fine as far as I can tell. Ballast runs pretty hot. I can keep my hand on my ARO 250w electronics I have on my big tank and they're warm, but the ballast on this thing is so hot that I can't put a hand on it for more than a few seconds and it's a bit too hot to stay there. With the light and the fan, I'm pretty much watching the water level drop as I sit here, so topoff will be important.
