Loosing clams..Help.

I've had 9 clams in my tank for several years, with no problems. I have 6 maxima/crocea that I had to the top of the tank in the same location the whole time.I recently just lost the smallest 2, around 5-6 " each. It seems to start by them loosing thier foot, then a small spot on the mantel, then death. Looks like it might be going to the next smallest one. The largest clams on the sand bed, Gigas, Squamosa, Derasa, have all been fine. It also appears that the mantels are more contracted thean before.I did recently add a pink tail trigger, but have not observed him pick on any yet. Can't think of any other major changes, might be a hair more flow. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Todd

well with a clam losing his foot, it is very hard for them to survive most times a clam with no foot will end up dieing sadly, the retracted mantle part if you start noticing that add fresh carbon to your tank 9 out of 10 times they will be ok if you do that

List all water parameters, fish, and inverts in your tank. Have you added any new clams within the last two months? Pics would help.

None of the parameters, fish, inverts have changed , with the exception of the Trigger. I do have some GSP starting to grow around the clams, didn't know if this could cause such an issue.Didn't know if something caused the foot to detatch or if the foot detached after the clam was stressed.like I said before these are very mature clams in a mature tank.Minimum time of 2 Years up to 5 years in captivity.

If the foot is getting ripped out and pieces of the mantle are disappearing I am willing to bet that one of your fish has something to do with it. Predatory fish are smart and will flip the clam on its side in order to get at the vulnerable byssal opening... especially on croceas.

Well the possible offending fish, trigger decided to go carpet surfing while I was at work today. I guess we will see if that solves the problem.
