Losing hope..

You can put it together like a flat screen and glue a couple little acrylic squares to the top of the screen frame so they stick out over the edge a little. You make the screen small enough to fit just inside the glass and the tab rest on the the top of the glass edge, holding the screen from falling into the tank.

Well I saw this thread and said to myself I feel like I been "losing hope" of ever getting my build done enough to where I can start putting stuff in it and feeling like I have accomplished something lol.

So yeah I lost a few fish in my 10 gallon which got me wanting to build a bigger tank thinking that would help me some. I guess we will see. So my fish seems like they were doing fine for a while and then boom they start breathing hard and are floaters.

I also got them from petco and I think they have some nasty stuff going around that I didn't really understand and QT would been a good idea. I also thinking about going to a different LFS now as others have mentioned. Maybe mail order is a different option as well for you if you don't have a good LFS around. duno..

I know how it feels to get frustrated when you don't know completely what might be going on. So hopefully we can both hang in there.

Well IMO you only really lost one fish as the jumper did his own demise and you will fix that with a screen top.

As for the Angel those are wild caught and there is no way to know what methods were used in collection. Some are caught with cyanide gas and this will in most cases cause an unexplained death in the future as the won't live long. It usually takes a while for this to happen but it comes as a totally unexplained death.

Don't lose hope and yes you would be best to get rid of most of the damsels as to me they 're the devil :lmao:

Good luck with your tank and I do think you're doing things right.

No I did not list alk.. I dont test for it nor does the lfs. Just as a dumb question, does that affect coral/fish or both? I assume both but would like to be sure. I know I have not been in the "game" for a long time but my dad had tanks since the 70's and I did not hear of quarantining until a few months ago when I found Reef central. Maybe I am a step behind.

Alkalinity can have an impact on both fish and coral. I like to shoot for 9 DKH plus or minus .5. There is a relationship between alkalinity, calcium and Magnesium. A whole lot of chemistry that I am not able to explain well. There are a number of articles by Randy holmes Farley that breaks it down pretty good. If you got to the sticky at the top of the forum called setting up and scroll down there is a section called reef chemistry articles by Randy.

I would suspect that with what you have in your tank right now routine WC's would keep the Alkalinity, calcium and magnesium in check. Unless your adding something to buffer pH, if so stop doing that we can discuss it if you are.

Have you considering setting your qt to 1.020 and slowly raising the salinty .001 every week? It is easier then drip acclimation and easier on the fish.

Dkuhlmann, good point. I guess the screen is my fault, and the angel could be unexplained. I appreciate the support. If I *can* I may have to remove the damsels for peace of mind, although I am not sure they are the culprit (but I do not have eyes on it 24/7).

Thanks for the advice gone fishin, I perform monthly water changes so far at 15% which seems to have been good to keep my levels in check. I do not use ph buffer, actually had never heard of it till the lfs here mentioned it and I asked about it on RC back in August haha.

Random Fish Guy, I would like to do something like that, as I mentioned I failed to setup a quarantine in time for the angel/blenny (shoots self in foot).

I think I will try to let things calm down for a bit, possibly remove the damsels. Other than that I will try to stay positive and keep reading/researching. Thanks everyone!

So my fiance is out of town for work (she works remote so went back to the office) and typically feeds throughout the day. I went to feed the fish when I came home... and no yellowtail damels to be seen anywhere. Granted, it was ~45 mins before the light goes off..but I wonder if there is something or some"fish" taking lives in there....

Just thought I would throw that update in there.

hmm.. I have never seen anything like a mantis shrimp in there.. I only have snails. Although when I started I purchased a 10-15 lb live rock from the store so I guess something could have hitch hiked. What is a way I can find if it is? Are they nocturnal for example? or do they have specific behavior? Also how big of a shrimp am I looking for if it is able to kill a fish roughly half an inch? one or two inches im assuming?

I have just seen pictures but I believe they can get up to 6 inches. I believe another mystery killer is a gorilla crab. These are some of the things folks fear coming in on what I call true live rock, like from tampa bay saltwater.

lol they sound like horror stories I started searching through reef central. I cant think I have anything like that (although I may be wrong). I might return the remaining fish to the store and wait 72 days just in case something is occurring that I cannot see, although that will truly be a drag.

Yeah the fallow period is a bummer. I had to do it about 6 years ago. It is a good time to fix any plumbing, sump work or rock work that has been bugging you.

Thats kind of what I am thinking, go fishless- hopefully starve whatever might be in there- or do it for no reason at all haha. But I could get to redo some of my plumbing now that you mention it... and then I could save $ for a rebirth in February..

haha thats too funny regarding the fresh water dips on the mantis.

What!? Thats crazy, I may have to go check that out. Its like whenever I am on youtube I end up watching bobbit worms..angler fish..other crazy things that happen but havent seen that one yet!
