lost everything

Well, if there's one piece of advice I can give in this hobby, it is to never move. I know others have been successful and moving tanks, but I wasn't.

Last weekend, I moved from Altoona to Erie. At the same time, I decided to upgrade my display tank from 75 to 125g. I carefully packed everything in bags, buckets and boxes, and bought two 35gal water transport containers to take as much of my old water as possible. I had 35g of fresh SW waiting for me in my new tank in Erie.

Unfortunately, it took longer to pack my tank and equipment than expected and it was MUCH colder than expected that night. So, between teardown, packing, loading the uhaul, and driving 4 hours, my water temp dropped to below 50 degrees (it was 39 outside that night!!!). I made a decision to keep the corals in their containers for another 4 hours while the water increased to at least 75, which apparently was the wrong decision.

So, in the last 4 days, everything has died. Mushrooms and LPS immediately slimed with brown jelly. Acros bleached within hours. Fish and inverts died the next day. the only thing that may make it are my softies, which I'm still not sure about. I've been doing 35g water changes twice a day to try to slow the dying process, pulling out the dead stuff. Today, I'm finally able to at least see through the water column, and there's nothing left but rock.

To say that I'm devastated would be the understatement of the century.

:sad2:

Thanks
I may have to come to the swap after all. I definitely won't have anything to sell, but if my parameters are back in line by then, I'll be needed something to fill my sad tank :(

Blech. Sounds awful! I heard you were moving (sorry to hear about that, too, hopefully you can still play in the club) but would never have expected this for a reasonably short move. I'm amazed that temps dropped so fast. Bad news for sure. Good luck with the rebuilding!

Vickie, I will have a frag or two for you at the swap to help in the rebuilding process. How about some pink palys and an acro or two?

see you there!! :) :(

Sorry to hear about your tank. I know how you feel.. I just went through the same thing.

It really sucks.... Keep on chugging though.

There is a good friend of mine Clarkiiclown in Erie and I know they started a club there too. Sorry to hear about your lost and hope you don't give up.

A club in Erie would be awesome, Mo. Are they on RC?

Thanks, everyone, for the offer to help with my tank. At this point, I'm not going to even attempt any SPS/LPS until I'm sure it's stable. Params are off the charts. I may be ready for softies or mushrooms by the time the swap comes around. If anyone has any reef-safe fish they'd want to sell, I think I'm sticking with a simple setup until I move to a permanent location up here in the spring.

My water is mostly clear today and my house doesn't smell like curing live rock, so there has to be a light at the end of this tunnel. I'm about over hauling 5g buckets up and down the stairs. <sigh>

Sorry to hear of the losses. I hope you can get to the swap to restock. I am sure we can help you out.

Well I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I see you saw my thread about moving and I will definitely take your advice about watching temps. I luckily only have a 15 minute move so I should be OK I hope. Good luck and I hope you get everything back up and going again.

Thanks, everyone, it helps to have others who understand what really goes into a setup like ours and what it means to lose it. Most of my friends and family are just thinking I lost a few pretty fish and can just simply replace them. AUGH! They're more disturbed over my "nemo" dying than they are over my show-sized acros and 8" deresa!

Anyway, I do not intend to give up yet, even though I lost thousands of dollars of work and even more hours of time, I love this hobby. Hopefully all those people I sold frags to can sell them back to me, once I'm cycled ;-)
