lost most of my livestock to ick

like the title states, lost most of my fishies...
now time to fix it and where do I start? do I tear it down and start all over again? water change? I know I wont get most of the ick parasites out of my tank. I still have a diamond goby in there but as far as I know they don't get ick

I had the same issue a while ago. One fish brought it in and most of the fish got sick. I removed them all, unfortunetly, I lost a lot. I had to remove all the rock and corals and it took me 4 hours to get them out. I took this as a time to re-scape the rockwork. The day after I put it all back and refilled the tank my YWG was still in the tank. I couldn't find him when there was only an 1" of water in the tank, so I presumed he died. I kept an eye on him and he never got sick. I left all other fish out for 2 months and slowly added back after that and as of today they are all healthy.

So, if your diamond goby is OK, you could try to just monitor him, but don't add any other fish for 2 months.

Please read the stickies at the top of this forum to understand the life cycle and treatment options for cryptocaryon (marine ich). Bottom line is that you must remove ALL fish from the DT, treat them in a dedicated hospital tank and leave the DT fallow for 10 weeks minimum.

If you leave the DWG in the tank, he will allow the parasite to continue its life cycle and act as a vector for future additions to your DT.

There is another subtle problem and that is that some fish (perhaps 5%) develop temporary immunity (six months) but they still carry the parasite.

And by the way, ich (cryptocaryon irritans) is not a quick killer, it tends to eventually overwhelm because of the exponential nature of the parasite in captivity. So it may be you had velvet, brook, or uronema for a timeline that was quick and resulted in high level of fatality. But if you are sure it was ich, then you probably had it for a while and it just eventually overwhelmed all the fish.

yes it was ick for sure.... I was treating the main tank with reef safe meds. the meds worked for me a long time ago so I didn't bother moving the livestock to a qt tank, but this time it didn't work.

Unfortunately, reef safe meds do not work. You may not have been aware that they were not working because the symptoms of ich come and go, but eventually, ich overwhelmed the tank.

I guess not, I was pretty confident that it will work... Last time I had an ick outbreak was almost two years ago. The meds I used back then worked like a charm.

Should u remove the corals on my main tank aswell?

now time to fix it and where do I start? Read ALL the stickies here on Cryptocaryon. do I tear it down and start all over again? water change? Water changes will do nothing to combat Cryotocaryon. I know I wont get most of the ick parasites out of my tank. Why not follow a proper procedure and get all the ich out? I still have a diamond goby in there but as far as I know they don't get ick. Wrong.
