Lost

Well, I just woke up to the smell of death. I look over toward my tank and see a lot of white. Just about all of my SPS corals are now bare skeletons. My clam and LPS corals are stressed beyond safety. I am not sure about the other corals. Fish are fine. I did about 50 tests to find the problem but could find nothing out of wack. So i started checking my power heads, and guess what. One of my maxi jets that is in the back of my tank is completely rusted out. So i figure that the rust has killed off the majority of my tank. (Lost Marbles had a similar experiance) I am most ****ed that I lost my 3 year old montipora digi colony. It was bright orange, and when i measured it this morning it was about 9 inches by 7 inches.

My question is should i just do a lot of water changes and then leave the tank alone for about a month?

edit: If the majority of stuff is gone when the lights go on, I think that I am going to do major changes. I am going to remove the majority of my rock and just have two seperate islands that are a little bit bigger than a basket ball. Then i am going to only have about 4 or 5 sps that i want to grow (manly stags).

Sorry to hear this!!! Did the powerhead just "open up all of a sudden" letting the rust out? I would think you would see a gradual decline of the acros with the rust, unless it was unleashed all at one time.

I would water change heavily and run some carbon and polyfilters, from the color the polyfilter turns might tell you if it was a metal that caused the problem.

Man that is a shame. I'm real sorry to hear this Trottie. Hang in there, I know you'll figure it out and bounce back. Good luck with it.

If someone is willing, i have some really killer lps that i put in my bros tank last night because my tank was going down. I want to save them. Anyone willing to watch a few corals for a while?

Preferably someone within 25 min of GWA.

thanks.

Nanook, it has happened over the period of about 3 days. I just thought that they were a little stressed on wednesday. then i was gone thurs, and here we are today.

I find that my monti digi still has polyps left on it. not completely dead! i have about 10 pieces that i need to find a temporary home for. If you have room that would be sweet.

one large sps and the rest are braincorals, frogspawns, hammers, and large zoo colonies

Cool on the help from LM! I have a 40g breeder that has issues of it's own and not a lot of room....wouldn't be a "safe" place yet.

Hang in there!

Sucks to hear Matt. Let me know if you need any help or equipment. I'd personally do a 75% or larger water change and run a large polyfilters. I'm assuming you're already running carbon.

I had to order a new impeller for my euro reef because I noticed the same thing in my tank a couple of weeks ago. The thing was rusted and was leaching rust into the tank. I lost a few things including new sps frags Lost Marbles fraged for me.

I have a few spots open in my tank. I can babysit your lps....

i got all of the coral out of my tank. My 5 fish look fine.

I think my large digi might make it. and my super man too. they are both at dave's along with a bunch of lps. my zoos are in my bros tank. i am doing about 50 gallon water change.

thanks, i think i have it under control now.

looks like my sedra pump on my Euroreef is alos a little rusted. But the maxi jet one looks like the titanic does when ever you see live underwater videos of it. completely desimated by rust.

after further investigation, it appears that it may not be rust. there is a black goop all up in the prop area of the MJ. it smells like terpintine. ill get pics in a min

Hmmm, that is wierd...I think the motor is supposed to be sealed...does it look like the housing is cracked or split somewhere?

Wonder if they would compensate your loss if it was due to a split in the housing?

looks like it overheated and melted the epoxy out and probably exposed the copper winding to the saltwater.JMO.I had my mag 36 split the impeller and rust up.

That's an old old model. I would guess early-mid 90's but I could be wrong. It's a MP model. MJ's are known for long life but when a pump of any kind is that old it may be best to round file it. I'm still running a couple things with some old ones too I better do some inspection.

cleaning my mini-jet tonight!!! Sorry to read about your losses but the warning may have saved others.

turns out that the where the magnet sits melted or cracked. Water got up in there and that nasty ness came out. on a second smell, it smelled more like electrical fire.
