Very cute little octo. I was wondering if you have ever left the cover off to see if it would crawl out? There is a study that is going on hosted by James Woods about what species will or will not crawl out of a open tank. Some are more prone than others. O.vulgaris and O.briareus and Enteroctopus dofleni are known escape artists. Bimaculoides is one that almost refuses to leaave the water. O.cyanea is another that is reluctant to leave the water.

I have only seen her explore the top of the tank once and I did take off the top to see what she would do. She was not scared to crawl a few inches above the water. She extended a couple of arms to feel/taste the outside of the tank and then decided she was better off in the water. From watching her behavior though I do not think she would leave my tank if I left the top off, but then I would have dust floating around in my tank. She usually stayed in her cave, but would come out for about an hour each night to hunt for crabs or to eat shrimp I gave her. I am using the past tense here because she doesnt do anything anymore except guard her eggs.
check out my thread on octopus eggs, I posted a picture of the eggs there. So far no eye spots have shown up yet. If the eggs are fertile then I am offering them to cephalopoder. He is only an hour away from me by car and ready to care for octopus babies.
