Low flow drain

I was given a tank that was drilled on the sides. A 1-1/2" for the overflow and a 1" for the return. The problem I'm running into is the return pump (Mag 7) pumps water out of the sump faster than the overflow can fill the sump. Any suggestions?

If your useing 1 return then add another one and use some shut off vlaves to adjust there flow or increase overflow.

I just don't understand why the water just trickles out of the overflow. And I've verified that there is no obstructions.

The higher the water level in the tank gets, the faster it will run out the bulkhead. If the water level gets above the bulkhead, which it very well could, then you can get an air lock issue. I've seen pics where people would drill a hole in the pipe, right where it comes out of the bulkhead, use a threading tool and add threads to the hole, then install a John Guest valve so you can let air into/out of the pipe. That keeps the flow steady and quiet.

Sorry I didn't follow up last night on the other board...

First off, the pipe is only 1" and only capable of handling about 600 GPH max. The other issue I see is that it looks as though there is no real durso/herbie/stockman so there is no air/water mix. Basically I think you are likely vapor locking the lines;)

For that application I would 86 the grey pipe and build a drain out of hard PVC that keeps things heading down hill, rather than horizontally. Then I would build a stockman and make an adapter on the inside of the tank and maybe make and add a weir around it. There are ways to make it work that sound like a lot of work, but its not that bad.

Even inverting a 90 on the inside, and adding a hole on the outside 90 with some tubing would work.

I'm assuming that adding a hole on the outside 90 is like the Dorso? What tubing would I need and where?

Yup. When I get home I can try to get a pic up. I have my fuge plumbed about the same way. As for the type of tube, that is up to you. RO tubing works well, you only need a few inches so that the height of the tube is higher than the water level of the tank;)
